NOTTING
HILL CARNIVAL 2012 COVERAGE
Trinidad
and Tobago Celebrates 50 years of Independence 2012 marked my 6th Notting Hill Carnival (NHC), yup... haven't missed one since 2007), and although most folks would consider me a NHC guru of some sort, there's nothing better than one's 1st time experience. So, let's hear from our NHC Virgin.... The Notting Hill Carnival is dominated by the British Trinidadian community and so there were red and black flags everywhere and the party was bigger than ever.
The carnival
is not really a carnival at all carnivals are traditionally held
in Lent it is actually a Masquerade or "Mas".
However, that technicality in no way interfered with the fun! Day One - Its all about music and getting dirty... in a fun clean way!
This year I decided to ride through the streets of Notting Hill with some of my close friends and be a part of the event, rather than watch it on TV. And their feedback was unbelievable. They described it as "life changing", "emotional", "the best event they had ever attended" and the reason is hard to describe, but I'll try
First, the vantage point of being on a truck allows you to look out over a sea of more than a million people representing every culture, language and religion that resides in or visits London. Standing with a live band looking out over the crowd not only gives you the experience of feeling like a rock star on one of the worlds biggest stages it also allows you to see the genuine joy in peoples faces as they celebrate life. Secondly, this is the biggest party in Europe and it feels like it. Third, this is simple entertainment based on bringing people together to enjoy music and dance without inhibitions in the streets of one of the most exciting cities in the world. But the most important message of Mas is how similar we all are for the two days of Mas political, religious and cultural differences disappear and London becomes a melting pot defined simply by our common humanity. Day Two - Its all about the costumed Masqueraders partying hard for more than 10 hours in the streets of London
I enjoyed Notting Hill Carnival more than I thought possible, and it was amazing to see people throw themselves into the spirit of the weekend.
