Batabano... is here to stay.

When the month of May rolls around, most carnival lovers are still in full tabanca (Post Carnival Depression) mode coming off their Trinidad and/or Jamaica carnival high. But not me. Cayman Carnival "Batabano" is calling my name. Batabano has been held annually since 1983 by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and has become an integral part of Cayman’s heritage. Today, it's one of the biggest events the Cayman Islands see each year, and Trini Jungle Juice is thrilled to have been a part of it for the past 9 years.

Not to sound like a broken record, but Cayman Airways will get you to and from, Andy's Car Rental will get you around the island, and Singh's Roti Shop will satisfy your curry fix! Once on the island (Grand Cayman), there are three (3) certainties.

  1. Batabano will host some of the biggest names in the soca industry for the carnival weekend. The likes of Machel Montano, Destra, Kes the Band, Bunji Garlin and the list goes on and on. Let's not even get started on the DJs.
  2. Expect an awesome Parade of the Bands. Although most Carnival enthusiasts seek a full day parade route, the Batabano jump up is PERFECT for this carnival. The colorful street parade begins on West Bay Road and proceeds along the magnificent Seven Mile Beach stretch, ending in downtown George Town.
  3. On Sunday, Batabano offers one of the best Carnival Cool down parties/limes ... period. Get on a boat (party or private) and head on out to Rum Point, Star Fish Point or Stingray City!

We kicked off our 2017 Batabano weekend at SKIP - Stay Kool, I Pumpin' pool party at Margaritaville. After which all roads lead to the Batabano Friday Night Fete "Outta D Blue" which featured Trinidad & Tobago's reigning Soca Monarch Voice, alongside Olatunji and Shal Marshall. It was good vibes only at the waterfront on Harbour Drive where entertainment was also provided by an international and local cast of DJs. On Saturday Parade of the Bands, Fresh Carnival (262 points) took home the "Band Of The Year" title for the second year in a row edging Tribal Carnival by only one point (261 points). Talk about close competition. From the looks of things, this year's Batabano parade appeared to be another success with Batabano Chairperson Donna Myrie-Stephen reporting up to 2,000 masqueraders in 11 masquerade bands on the parade route. We also saw new comer Carnival Nationz out of Toronto.

In between all of the festivities, be sure to take full advantage of one of the world’s best beaches - Seven Mile Beach. Its gorgeous clear waters and coral sands still lure visitors from around the world.
