I am disappointed in this year's selection for Miss World, Ms. Arthur is not Miss World material, her features are very heavy and her photo on Globalbeauties.com is not easy on the eye. We can do better.

To Roger: Her features are heavy on the eyes based on what Europe told you beauty should be. Wake up.....The world is changing......
You go Ashana. You are beautiful.... |

To Liz and Khadja, I am a fan of both Ms. Universe and Miss World since the early 1970s. As a teenage of the 1970s, I don't used Euorpean standard to measure the beauty of TNT women, for they are the most beautiful women in the world, Penny, Giselle, and Wendy are living proof. Ms. Arthur needs to win the Beauty with a Purpose, if she hopes to advance into the top ten. I read it, as I see it. She is not Ms. World material, just take a look at Ms. Republic of Trinidad and Tobago past title holders. It is all about winning the CROWN, babies!

Roger, it is always easy to be the nay sayer when the person is not a traditional beauty/ a European beauty. But we know that Ashanna is the best woman for the job. She will do us proud!

Ashana is very deserving of representing Trinidad and Tobago. She has beauty with her purpose and I believe she would do us proud. She is unique, intelligent and a non-typical "beauty queen". I support you all the way.......

For those who were actually at the show it was clear that she rightfully won that show.... She is/was the most ready and with a little work she should do great. Good Luck girl!

I think that these folks who are giving this poor girl false hope by using these statements are all friends of hers any fool can tell that . The whole of Trinidad are upset about what the judges did. I am not saying that she is ugly nor UN intelligent. I saw the photo and was at the show she even got best photogenic it is incredible who can do such a thing the other deserving girls must feel bad about that and for this reason they would not support this girl which makes it worse . I agree with the gentleman all the way With Nicole Dyer the public was just as dissatisfied . There is no comparison with this girl to the other 2009 contestants I have seen for the Miss world competition and I am afraid for the franchise holder as this is his first time. He would certainly get bashing from the higher heads . He should have made sure that a better selection was made .She is intelligent i am sure and so are the other contestants only that they are beautiful and she is not and may not even get a chance to show her intelligence...at the end... appearance always stands out first and this is a beauty pageant as well. We can take Althea Rocke for an example beautiful but her ability to converse was not correct we got a chance to see that at the end but she was at the top for she was one of the most beautiful there that night. I am honest and straight forward who do not like it that's ok.....

Who are you to be judging this girl when you yourself cannot even construct a simple sentence. You definitely need to go back to school.

It is truly amazing, that so many of us are still live in the past. We should be able to come to our own decisions, and not accept preset judgements to shape our lives. Unfortunately, this will continue. Ashanna is a beautiful person, who will make Trinidad and Tobago proud.

A better girl could have been selected. I'm sorry that the new franchise holder would be blamed for what was clearly poor judging.... She can't compare to some of our past Miss TnT/World delegates. Physically, she's not attractive and there's nothing stellar about her intelligence or personality...

Well said Ms. Nelson!!
I got to view the show last night. I'am sure many also saw and from my viewing Nadiege should have come in the chosen three. Even if this lady (second runner up) did manage to make sense with her answer but it was after a long pause. Nadiege answered smoothly Chenelle (first runner up) was a winner from the start she spoke from her heart. I found that the show involved too many questions, after all these girls were trained for only a few weeks. Intelligence or personality for this Ashanna really was not that spectacular and it scares me to know the type decisions that our local judges make, are they not thinking about the feelings of the sponsors. If I am sponsoring I would like to know I am excited to sponsor someone who will stand a chance, in this case I now know why there is always a hold back when it comes to sponsorship. Also the government will get tired of spending money in vain. Again, well said Ms Nelson |

hey.....everyone....i personally believe that Ashana won fair and square as she was overall good ........however i agree that she might not shine on an international stage..........i know this photographer who judged the ms. photogenic he had to be stark raving mad to give ashana the title...that should have gone to sunita dairam....i also believe that nadiege should have won miss intelligence and be in the first three....no way danielle tardieu moze should have come in the first three....... chenelle maloney could have won but she kept going on and on and on during question time and couldnt stop...........it must be known that the lady who trained these girls rehearsed the interview section before hand, so the delegates knew how the interview was coming....this was a recipe for disaster because some delegates mainly chenaka dramatized her answers.....questioning should be spontaneous. Judges sometimes spoil our chances in winning or placing...i remembered when giselle la ronde had the franchise for a short period they chose the most horrific delegate to represent us one year even the lady was shocked that she won the local pageant the night for the show.............. when you are chosing a delegate the first thing is to make sure the delegate can shine on stage...intelligent yes....but you dont have to be educated to be intelligent...........peo ple are so fooled with a degree in this country ...i may be wrong but penny didnt have a degree when she won ...giselle la ronde either........and many delegates who made it in the past in the semi finals of both competitions also, including Michele khan...not having a degree didnt stop them from shining.....The esteemed judges decided so whether or not i will be supporting our representative....Ashana all the best.....my pic in the first five for miss world was nadiege.....though....... ... people we need to support our representative to the ms. world pageant 2009 ....u never know..................... ........... good luck again ashana and take that dress you wore but change the hairstyle take care

You made good points and I agree with you however remember really there were to many interviews for one little show and I do not think I heard the members of the pageant mentioning any gifts for those top three girls. Chenelle may have gone on a bit longer but the poor thing like many of the others would have been nervous with all those questions three sets before the final, I think she did very well also for someone with no degree. From what I know, this was just a few weeks training and she could have been trained further her answers were very good and this is what should be looked at. The ladies from Venezuela are trained for years some even undergo cosmetic surgeries... they appear perfect but not after three weeks Nadiege is indeed a pretty girl I hope she do not give up. I hope in the future the judges really use what God give them and stop playing the monkey.

u know people can be so cruel.......ashana isnt the most classic beauty and not even photogenic but she is beautiful both outside and inside.........geez although i didnt agree with her being the winner.....o gosh man people still think wendy fizwilliam is unattractive and i totally disagree even after meeting her before she won the miss t and t contest in 1997 0r b1998 this world is something else ....ashana girl u go and shine and if u dont daz ok......u did yur best
|
said this on 14 Oct 2009 10:10:00 AM UTC
For Mr. Pepito "ashana girl u go and shine and if u dont daz ok u did yur best" clearly this is such a foolish statement. This is why our country is the way it is.... only now the international stage will have to see how much political interference takes place in such a small island. THIS IS A MISS WORLD PAGEANT!!! if u don't shine daz ok u did your best??. Based on the judging I feel that they think the same way. Why does Venezuela not think the same? why are they a country known for wining? why do they train their young women so well that they are known for their beauty? Why has there never been an unattractive Miss World or Miss Universe? These local judges needs to wake up. Also the persons training the girls is supposed to take raw talent to a perfection of high standard, therefore a girl seeming to have a flare but rough around the edges but gorgeous like Nadiage and Chenelle should be trained further we can polish a dull surface with time but we cannot erase unattractiveness does not matter the amount of make up. Trinidad has lots of beautiful young women. Ashana representing this country looking like that... will not give the impression that this country has indeed beautiful women at all!! it may also state that the beautiful women if we have are all FOOLISH and unintelligent and this is NOT TRUE. Ashana could PERHAPS be a wonderful human resource officer, a fantastic economist even a great coordinator NOT A MISS TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO BEAUTY QUEEN TO REPRESENT US. What amazes me is the fact that women like Ashana do not know their place! and somehow love to partake in events that are unsuitable for them. To make it worse the Judges encourage this type of foolishness by without thinking long term allowing them to win. Now all girls in this country who are not pageant material may now think that they can enter ....and even win....but base on the public respond(thanks for this) they will think twice .
The true beauties however may hesitate to enter because of fear that they would not be placed from what has been done by these local Judges. Nadiege is one good example, I am wondering how she felt. This was to be an event where the girls can look back and feel proud of .....I think that for many of them it would be a nightmare more so because of the Choice also no gifts when they have worked so hard and probably put out whatever little money they had to enhance their appearances . I love my little Island in the sun..... but the mentality of these so called judges oh my.....the mentality of the photographer in this contest, takes away the joy of honesty, the joy of a deserved excitement in the land stemming the decision of an important competition. Instead a poor girl is being mislead a girl who certainly now have to undergo the disrespect, disregard and anger of the public bad statements, all because of the irresponsibility of the people who are placed in charge, the people who abused their privileges that night but she is also has to take some blame for entering in the first place. I have to also wonder if the Franchise holder was not aware that giving ashana all those added trophies e.g one undeserving which she received (most photogenic) would have given her extra points. Maybe this is what caused her to have more points that the other girls. If they had split fairly these trophies and given fairly some to Nadiege, Sunita, Tova, all would have gone the way it should have... honest and professional by the way I did not see chenelle maloney receiving her best in evening wear trophy on the event itself..... we had to learn about this from the news papers but ashana got all of hers on the night itself for all to see. Another BAD THING IS THAT THE NATION NEVER GOT TO SEE THE OTHER CONTESTANTS ON THE NEWS PAPER THE FAMILY OF THE OTHER GIRLS DESERVED TO SEE THEIR CHILDREN ON THE NEWS PAPERS AS TIME WENT BY IF NOT THE FIRST DAY BUT FOR THE WEEKEND THERE WERE ABSOLUTELY NONE SHOWN OF THE OTHER GIRLS!!! as it is clear that maybe the camera personnel (who were many) ......when they saw the reality for example that the first runner up looking more like the queen they did not want to further add insult to injury...but the whole of Trinidad except for of course the family and friends of Ashana is upset by this choice. When you take the facts into consideration and add up the friends and family against a whole country the voice of the people is the voice of God. |

Wow! don't get me wrong, she looks good on paper, but her looks need much improvement. I saw her on Gayelle and the interview lacked poise, proper sentence construction etc. its good if you are just another local trying to get recognition, but if you are going to represent your country internationally you should practice practice practice! even on your home soil. Its all about first impression. I am a little disappointed but I am willing to give her a chance. Who knows, with a great makeup artiste, the right clothes and a proper coach - something good could come out of this!

I saw the show last evening with the winner miss la toya this was a good show ...I was very happy to see the prices awarded to her I hope the franchise holder of miss world will be told that the winner got over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth in cash and prices. This show also was carried out in such a way that the questions asked were just enough, not over done like the set of questions those girls had to undergo that night in order to know if they are intelligent ...waste of time with all of those questions makes no sense . I saw this girl with two gentleman in england she did not look so bad still there is a big BUT...I am glad this photographer got all those bad responses to his photos he really did make a mess of those girls but quite frankly this is the true face of this girl...those girls must be feeling still sour the fact that they got nothing for their time and drilling with this miss world 2009 so sorry for them.

hey guys i saw that every paper had the first and second runners up faces showing bold and nicely all three together, for the public viewing. I am still to see the faces of the first and second runners up for the miss world in the news papers... what a shame!!! that All the papers that following, day felt the need to show only ashana.... and half the faces of the other two kissing her.

i was so disappointed in this show. i think the final three should hav been nadiege, danielle and chenelle. i was at the show and the crowd was ridiculous i felt so bad. when danielle was answering her question when the final five were being questioned, some disrespectful racist idiot was heard saying LOUDLY for the entire auditorium to hear "she doesnt deserve to be up there, a white girl can't represent trinidad and tobago"..u cud see it threw her off but she smiled and after a couple seconds answered her question, and answered well. apparently it really upset her backstage tho. and i dnt kno who sent nadiege on stage in a curtain, and i dont know why chenelle was up there if she was being forced into the competition, but i like her still. the only ones i found interesting and wanted to hear more about were these three. another thing i hated about the whole thing was BAD STYLING and makeup..in some photos from their miss world photoshoots, chenelle and danielle dont even look like themselves. i hope the franchise holders learn from their mistakes. miss intelligence shud hav been either danielle or megan, best physique should hav been chenelle and most photogenic should hav been sunita.

I agree that her looks don't reflect classic western beauty as such, but she has large eyes and an interesting face that certainly insn't ugly and that a photographer would love to photograph. with the right lighting she would have amazing photos. The fact is the girl won, she's smart ambitious, polite and seemingly friendly enough. The most we as a country can do is support her. No one on this blog is a professional judge or has access to the requirements sheet. either she wins or she doesn't, if not, we have next year, and then we'll know better what not to look for and what to look for. It's only petty to call her names, especially as few of us on this blog may know her personally. She's only 21 and very excited i'm sure, I think this will be a good experience for her and i'm glad to see the local pageant industry getting back in the game. Besides, i think she has an uma thurman- esque quality (my opinion--breathe, take it easy), similar big widely spaced eyes and full lips. beautiful in an interesting way.

uma thurman hmmm.... I saw this lady and in a small way you are correct with the resemblance only that this woman is a classic but would soon turn into a mad woman if only she knew you can do such a thing as to compare ashana to her heeehhheee // oh yeah Vicky... I heard chenelle saying that her mom forced her to be there ...which probably was one of the most honest answers!! maybe she thought that she was not good enough or maybe her confidence were not as strong as ashanna or the others you know some people do not know what they are worth at times....and need to be reminded by the mature cultured individuals such as a Mom... what you should look at was the complete statement she made ...that she was happy that she entered, as she thought the girls would have been stuck up, only to realize that all the girls are/became like family got on so nicely to each other.... and so each one deserves to be the winner...I think that this girl is so intelligent and one of the most natural ones they had there that night...you were correct about the photos 100% the photographer was just on some kind of drug when he took those girls photos........

I think some people here are being overly insulting. Ashana is not a friend of mine because I do not know her. I do agree that when I first saw her I thought, okay she doesn't stand a chance. But the more I thought about it.. the more I saw that my reaction was because I was comparing her to some Barbie, misogynistic, colonial, European concept of beauty. She is by no means an ugly person. Compared to Miss Universe, Miss World is more about one's inner grace that transcends all. Judging from her interview on the Miss World site, she is remarkably intelligent and seems genuine. At the end of the day she is somebody's daughter born out of love, created by God. How dare some people here insult her as though she was some criminal. And that person who remarked that she was heavy on the features-- you must be a biased and sick person who only goes out with stereotypes. I have gone the site and I have seen other women who I shudder to think what some of you might say about them. What a sad society we live in when beauty is only what is Latina or European.

Gabby your comments make good reading but you fail to be realistic as to why many of the public were/are upset. It is simply that Ashanna should not have been selected nor should she have even entered in this type of event. I believe that she is indeed a nice person special in her own way but take for instance the williams sisters , they are champion tennis players , why do they not go up for Miss universe I will answer because that is not their cup of tea, they are smart and for this reason successful. Why did Micheal Jordan not take up a career in being a jockey ? simply because he would have been to tall so what did he did he used his hight to his advantage and it paid off...No one is disputing the fact that Ashanna is not born out of love or someone's daughter those statements sounds like really close family statements even if you do not want us to know it is my opinion.
I am looking at the latest events and comments now, and the favorites are Puerto Rico and Mexico the girl from Barbados also looks nice where is Ashanna??? It goes without saying she WAS NOT TO BE REPRESENTING TRINIDAD and as stated previously the false hope by relatives and friends will do her any good, as she will be reminded by this experience (bad one) for all of her life. At the end I see that this is not about talent etc one bit... those two women( puerto rico and mexico) are very beautiful and they stand out so tell me that this beauty with a purpose is not a joke in itself. I hope the franchise holder learn from this huge mistake. |

What European beauty standards? That's nonsense. Have you ever seen some of the women from Sudan or Ethiopia? Some of them are flawlessly beautiful. Any how this girl is probably attractive in person but come on, you're sending someone to represent Trinidad & Tobago as Miss World. I think the sponsor(s) needs to assess their judges.
Everybody is beautiful in their own way but again, on an international stage the standards have to be higher otherwise why bother. By the way Gonzo remark wasn't cool. |
