CROWD:
I’m not sure if ABIR was the official anti-chocolate band, but I guess you could say that if ya playing J’Ouvert and not in Chocolate, ya in ABIR. The different price options meant that they pulled even the casual reveller and just as the colours of the rainbow represent a mix, diversity was evident in the crowd for this band. Ya could tell the band was not just a bunch of Trini's in London, as you could hear the various accents, still so strong ya knew they weren’t diluted by years away from their homeland. Ya also saw faces that ya doh usually see in the London party circuit, which for some meant new eye candy. Sadly, it was not all positive as the band was sometimes peppered with random people floating in and out. It did not cause too much problems but did put a damper on the relaxed and free going atmosphere at times, especially as things got truly busy at certain points on the route.
VENUE/ACCESSIBILITY:
The meeting point was just up the road from Latimer Road tube station, pretty much where all other bands met up and ended as well. So in terms of venue you can’t lose points by going with the safe option. Latimer Road is one of the few stations not closed for the weekend, and sufficiently far enough from the main route so that going home did not mean dealing with huge crowds. Some credit is also due to the band for being on the route relatively early. I think this helped stragglers to find the band easily and also meant that the band was not in the thick of things when the crowds descended.
VIBES:
The vibes in the crowd was wonderful. After all the early comers had their breakfast and the truck pulled off, you could sense the anticipation of the revellers. What was a slow chip down the road in the morning sun at first, soon became hysteria and general giddiness as soon as the paint bottles were handed out and the alcohol started flowing. The ages within the crowd were very varied but the mindset very similar, in that they were all seeking a good time and therefore young at heart. Everyone looked like rebel school children decorating their white t-shirts and vests in the colours of the rainbow. Most importantly the music truck was doing its job to perfection. I was as if the were tuned to the rhythm and desires of the crowd rather than directing them. The tempo was increased as the crowd got more fired up and slowed down as ppl chipped along while eating their lunch. The organiser and DJs definitely win in this category, and many would agree.
SERVICE:
Breakfast and Lunch were provided for the All Inclusive patrons and I doh think there were any complaints. The major thing lacking was snacks, or more precisely, variety in the snacks. After the rotis for lunch went down so well, some people wanted a little nibble mid afternoon, but not everyone wanted cookies and crackers. Not to fear though, the drinks made up for everything. Nothing ran out (unless ya came to the bar after the music shut off and ya was still looking for rum). On the road, everybody was knocking back to their heart’s (but probably not their liver’s) content. And to make up for any lack of variety on the snacks side, the drinks range was wide and extensive, although not many band members seemed to care. From early in the morning till late at night the call was for RUM. And not just any rum, 10 CANE rum!! Rum and Coke, Rum and Sprite, Rum and Juice, Rum and Ice, Rum and Coconut Water, Rum and Soda, Rum and Ginger Ale… it was definitely the order of the day. But for those that had a particular palette or jus wanted to be different, the bar also had vodka, brandy, scotch ... and not just supermarket stuff, but Belvedere and Courvoisier.
COST/VALUE:
Revellers had two choices starting @ £25, and for £20 more .... breakfast, lunch and alcohol was yours! I think the split prices was really the kicker for value. There is a term in economics for it, but I cyah remember it right now. Each type of mas player got value for their money. I even over heard some girl say she left her white vest home on the day because it was too pretty to get paint on it. Almost everyone drank and ate way more than their £45 fee so on a real, I doh think there could be any complaints.
The overall rating is not a simple aggregation of the factors discussed above, but rather a general view in hopes of inspiring the organiser to push on and do even better next year. One recommendation would be to beef up the security, especially as the band will only become bigger next year, based on the success of this year.

I would totally agree...this was my first time with Abir...I am normally a Chocolate player (for over 5 years).
The only thing I wouldn't say is "Abir is the anti Chocolate" it's just another alternative for the masqueraders. And if you have been playing in chocolate for any lenght of time you would know it was part of Cocoyea...which Abir now is and I would say a safe bet of that being so is because of the brilliant music on the which was provided by Che in de mix (which he has been doing for cocoyea for many years...which means chocolate also) has something to do with it...which is a very good thing!!!...and yes the music was and will always be great once he's playing...it's always about the people and not about the DJ with him...so I would now like to say thank you Che in the mix for a great carnival...musically!!! Yes the service was second to none...from collection to finish...the vibes was absolutely great (and again thanks to DJ Che in the mix) the mix of people was great...the food was great...and who really cares about snacks when the bar was more than enough!!! So I would rate my first time with Abir as a FULL 100 POINTS!!!! Thank you to the Abir and Cocoyea management...I will be there next year for sure! |

Well I would totally agree with Miss Pierre...this has been my second Abir and it certainly would not be my last.
The service was excellent...as a matter of fact the whole experience was exceptional...and don't forget about the loyalty cards they handed out to all their masqueraders wich entitles them to special offers and discounts into their events (talk about looking after your patrons). And yes I to have to say on behalf of all the masqueraders a HUGE THANK YOU TO DJ CHE IN THE MIX...the mix, the vibe, the music and all the sh*t talk heckling people was great...that's what i would call knowing your people and making it an interactive experience so we feel part of it and not just a name and number in costume...as he kept saying all day "it's all about the feel good vibe" (which by the way DJ Che in the mix was missed in Trini Luau this year) at the end I understood why! I would say in a few years Abir to the world!!!! Thank you Abir management, I will also say it's a full 100 Points for a job brilliantly done!!! I look forward to what's coming next. |

I have been a cocoyea mas player for more years than I can remember. This is where chaocolate was born and grew to what everyone knows now and now because of Abir they have moved on, so hopefuly Abir will grow into something that will be loved by all.
They certainly have started in the right way and with the guidance and experience of Cocoyea may they continue in that light. From what I saw in the last 2 years and going from what the masqueraders were saying (my cousins played with abir this year) it was the best experience they have had in London for a very long time. And of course the music was the best, we have the best DJ in London or even one the best dj's full stop...lol...che in dce mix always deliver without fail. Now as I said, I didn't play with abir but was part of the same band (cocoyea) and it really was a great day, but my cousins said it's abir all the way from now on...they also said forget about the snacks on the road because when they collected their stuff it had a whole heap of products in the bag (all edible) and was also given free jamaican patties...so if that isn't great service, I don't know what is. Oh and how come abir score 8-8-9-8-8 = 41 and chocolate is 8-9-8-7-7 = 39 and abir overall is 80 and chocolate is 84?...just curious that's all! I will certainy be in abir (as a masquerader) next year...i would award full marks as well - 100 points for a job well done! |

Hi...I was just giving my opinion on abir and yes if it was a good, it's my opinion. as with reagrds to the dj, as far as i am concerned carnival is all about having a great time. Letting all your inhibitions go, whether or not you're in costume and the music have alot to do with that. you can play all the best songs there are, but without creating the right "vibe" it just would not work. so as you put it...there's nothing "suspect" about it. all djs who do a great job needs to be recognised, i mean they're on a truck playing music all day to make sure we have a great time.
So props to all dj's that do it...is that better for you?...lol...it's not about who's better than who...it's about the experience you have! so before you start a war or words (and bands) it's just people expressing how they feel. carnival brings out the love of a culture, does not matter where you're from, carnival is a way of life and an avenue of letting out steam and forgetting about your everyday trials and tribulation. so sweety embrace the love...as that's all it is! |

Nobody said anything bad about the DJ.. I just found it interesting that there are 3 very long comments all basically saying the same thing, nothing wrong with some banter ! I agree all DJs worked hard to give us a great carnival, don't worry, I 'embraced' the love !!

LoL...good come back Austin...I was now going to reply to your comment as well ;-)...but i agree with you to a certain extent!
my reason or should i say reasons for playing with abir are - 1. this was the home (cocoyea) of chocolate for many years and 2. they may have moved on but the dj didn't...it's the same dj that i have enjoyed for many years as well...so basically it's a case of better the devil you know...right?...hehe! so that's why i stayed with cocoyea/abir. but yes...props to all of the djs that have us gyrating uncontrollably on carnival day. Austin I don't know if you're from London or a new comer to London...if you're not you need to come and experience Notting Hill and if you're a new comer you would eventually know what we're talking about...LoL! so here's some more love for you to embrace... |

WoW...LoL...thanx for all the props an ting!!!
But I would just like to say that I wasn't the only DJ on the truck this year (which normally I am)...my partner in crime VENDETTA SOUNDS was with me and also his partner in crime from T&T DJ DURTY CURTY...so all in all it was a good day according to your comments. Once again thank you very much... |
