Hat's off to JUS BLAIZE and HIGHER IMAGE for creating an event that ought to be on the list of fetes to hit for the Caribana 2009 season. What would have been the icing on the cake would be to have a guest appearanceand live performance by a soca artiste! Whatcha thing about that!? See you next year!!!
CROWD:
The crowd was a little thin at first but filled in after midnight!
People were very friendly and a nice vibe was present at all times!
VENUE/ACCESSIBILITY:
Located at 150 Pearl St.(South of Adelaide…East of Duncan) THE Mink affords easy navigation to and from the location. The area at the time was well lit with ample competent and courteous security both inside and outside the event. Parking was available at a dedicated just across the street @ $CDN 15.00 or one could have paid $CDN4.50 and parked on the street all night. (Guess which one we chose?)
VIBES:
The overall mood of the fete was dictated by the DJ's including STARTIN FROM SCRATCH who had moved the pulse the crowd form The proverbial social "Tourist Chip" to "Wine and get on". What was really amazing/surprising was that just as the crowd was about to.....for want of better word..."climax"...., as a result of the relentless soca/dancehall onslaught, a Michael Jackson medley was thrown in as if to say......wait....wait darlin.....not yet. Initially this was okay...the DJ teasing and toying with the crowd but when it occurred on several other occasions it put a damper temporarily on the vibe which seems to have come in waves. Michael Jackson no doubt is the king of POP but there is nothing like Soca and dancehall to bring down the rooftop. Mr. DJ......look at yuh crowd. That aside the mood was one whereby the true carnival atmosphere was captured.
FOOD & DRINKS:
Drinks was was not a problem on the night as there were two bars where you could pick your poison or have it brought to you in the VIP area.
COST/VALUE:
Money money money...When it come to Carnival fetes West Indians and visitors have been know to pay upwards of $45.00 to have a good time. So when the cost of CDN$ 15.00 was announced in was not surprising that the tickets sold out.
SERVICE:
Special mention must be made to the security team at the MINK, not for any particular occurrence but being simply being able to be present without imposing on the fun and revelry. There are some police officers who have not mastered this technique. The hostesses were pleasant and extremely accomodating.
