Port of Spain – Pan Trinbago is euphoric following the successful debate on the bill entitled, "An Act to provide for the designation of the Steelpan as the National Musical Instrument of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago". The bill received full support of the Government and Opposition MP’s of the House of Representatives present in the Lower House Chamber at the Red House, Port of Spain on July 3rd, 2024.

President Beverley Ramsey-Moore, along with members of the Central Executives, Regional Executives, staff and Steelpan enthusiasts were present at the Public Gallery at the Lower House Chamber to witness this historical event.

According to President Beverley Ramsey-Moore, "The Steelpan, a symbol of national identity and rich heritage, has evolved from its origins in Laventille and Port of Spain into a globally celebrated musical marvel, instilling pride in all Trinbagonians. This evolution, shaped by the dedication and perseverance of its pioneers, has culminated in a significant milestone: the official recognition of the Steelpan as Trinidad and Tobago's national musical instrument by the government. Leading the effort to achieve official and legal recognition of the Steelpan as the national instrument under my leadership is immensely rewarding. Pan Trinbago has tirelessly advocated for this law, and witnessing the steelpan's unifying impact is particularly rewarding. As I always say, there's no off-season for pan, but this is definitely a time to celebrate the Steelpan!".

Pan Trinbago extends heartfelt appreciation to the government and the opposition for honouring the cultural legacy of Steelpan contributors, marking this occasion as a collective triumph that unites and inspires the nation.

Pan Trinbago commits to preserving, promoting, and advancing the Steelpan, working with stakeholders and musicians to inspire future generations and ensure its enduring place in the cultural landscape.

The debate will continue in the senate on Friday 5th July, 2024. Pan Trinbago also invites all citizens to log on to the Parliament Channel via the link: https://www.youtube.com/c/ParlView to listen to the proceedings and celebrate this historic milestone.
