Pan Trinbago Celebrates Historic Debate on Steelpan National Instrument Bill Led by Minister Randall Mitchell

Port of Spain – Pan Trinbago is elated to join the nation in celebrating a historic and momentous occasion: the debate on the bill entitled, "An Act to provide for the designation of the Steelpan as the National Musical Instrument of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago." This debate, led by Senator the Honourable Randall Mitchell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts, is scheduled to take place at the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago today at 4PM.

President Beverley Ramsey-Moore, along with members of the Central Executives, Regional Executives, and Steelpan enthusiasts, will be present at the Parliament to witness this significant event first-hand. Pan Trinbago, the parent body of the Steelpan and the Trinidad and Tobago Steelband Movement, played a crucial role in advocating for the Steelpan to be proclaimed the National Musical Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. Today's debate marks a significant milestone in the organization’s journey and honours the legacy of innovation, creativity, and resilience embedded in the beloved Steelpan.

The Steelpan is more than an instrument; it is a symbol of national identity, a testament to rich heritage, and a source of pride for all Trinbagonians. From its humble beginnings in the communities of Laventille and Port of Spain, the Steelpan has evolved into a globally acclaimed musical marvel, captivating audiences worldwide with its unique sound and rhythmic versatility.

On Friday, June 7, 2024, Pan Trinbago marked a significant milestone with the introduction of The National Musical Instrument Bill 2024 into Parliament. Following today's debate, the bill must secure approval from both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Upon receiving assent, it will be officially proclaimed into law, designating the Steelpan as the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.
