On the 25th of April in Miami at
Virginia Key Beach in Key Biscayne Generation X had their GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band Launch. The event was held from 10pm to 4am.
I attended and here's what I have to say.........
===========
Introduction
===========
For
all intents and purposes, if you are reading this piece of written
articulation you are a Soca Junkie. That means that you love soca music
and you listen to it morning, midday and night. You are most likely
also a carnival junkie. Meaning, if there is a carnival, you are there.
You love going to the big carnivals and hit some of the small ones in
between because you need a good soca injection. And if you are reading
this, there is a good chance that you are a fete junkie. Meaning, you
can't wait to get in a fete and get on bad and it doesn't matter who is
there or not there. When you reach, de ting now start. And it doesn't
matter if there is just one person in there or 4000, you are going to
have a good time.
But this fete was not about the soca junkies, or the fete junkies or the carnival junkies.
The GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band Launch was for a special subset of the carnival population.

But this fete was not about the soca junkies, or the fete junkies or the carnival junkies.
The GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band Launch was for a special subset of the carnival population.
A
subset that I did not know existed until after my virgin year at
carnival. While at carnival during my virgin year I was playing Monday
Mas and I saw one of the people that I met, who was also a fraternity
brother of mine, during the fetes for the week on the side of the road.
I didn't understand. So I asked him, "Dog Team, why aren't you playing
mas?" To which he replied, "Dog, some people live to play mas. I live
for J'ouvert!"
And I kept chippin' and faded away from him.
After my virgin year, I understood.
Playing
J'ouvert is part of the carnival experience. You go to carnival and you
play jouvert or you don't. That's just what it is, but when you are
willing to go to a j'ouvert fete with no carnival involved just because
you love jouvert..... well, that places you in a special group.
You are a J'OUVERT JUNKIE!!
During
carnival, jouvert is great because you have your j'ouvert junkies and
then your virgins there are well BUT.... when you get a fete full of
people who are j'ouvert junkies and just love j'ouvert, that is when you
see madness on a whole different level.
And this was why the GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band Launch was FANTASTIC!!!
==================
This Fete Was The
Definition of Anti-Stush
==================
As a coach and an observer, I like taking a step back from the madness
or the environment to just watch it from afar. Sometimes I can see more
than when I am in the middle of it. Just like you can see the mountain
clearer from the plain. Distance sometimes provides a better perspective.
There
were several times that I took myself out of the "fete" so to speak and
just watched it. To truly see what I was a part of. And I could clearly
see why I was there and why those persons who were there will play with
GenXRedAntz in Miami for Jouvert. It was clear.
It wasn't about the paint, powder and water.
Nor about the gorgeous women in the fete or the ample amount of male suitors for each bumper available.
Nor
was it about the music or the DJ. It was about the right group of
people being in the right place and being in the right environment.
The Generation X Band Launch setup
the experience and the tone of the j'ouvert as soon as you walked in.
They handed you your powder, directed you to the table of water bottles
filled with paint and when you walked in, the fete had begun. The place
was full of j'ouvert junkies who did not wait for the party to start.
They started the party.
There was no 20 minutes of light
chipping and vibing to the music before the pahty tun up. This fete went
from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds, not minutes. It was aggressive
and sexy.
It was THE ULTIMATE DEFINITION of Anti-Stush.
==================
Duttiness
==================
After
being in the fete for the first 5 minutes you were soaked with water
and paint. There was no way around it. At 11pm the powder started to
fly along with the paint and water. And then things really got turned
up. As I said before, this fete was for the J'ouvert lovers and J'ouvert
junkies. It was CLEAR by this time of the evening that all persons in
the fete go hard during j'ouvert and were doing so.
I heard
several people saying, "I'm playing with GenXRedAntz in Miami this year."
Even one of my friends that had no intention of playing with GenXRedAntz
left the fete and called me and said, "I'm playing with them this
year for sure."
I am telling you right now that there is SO
MUCH MORE that I would like to write BUT........ there's only so much
that you can say about J'ouvert in writing.
Let me be clear.
From what I saw, the GenXRedAntz J'ouvert band is for the person who is serious
about J'ouvert and goes hard during J'ouvert. CLEARLY as a J'ouvert junkie
this is clearly for me. I cannot speak to the person desires, needs and
wants of other but I can tell you this..... If yuh nah wan wine, then
this is NOT the j'ouvert band for you. This j'ouvert band is the
definition of Anti-stush! :-)
In my opinion, GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band is
a Must-Do for Miami Carnival. I'm telling you right now that The
Carnival Doctor is THERE in 2015.... with my crew!

The Best Part Of The Night
===================
It's
difficult to say what the best part of the night was because there were
many great moments but I would have to say that the best was at 3:30am
when they started moving the music truck and we went on de road!! Just
when you thought that the party couldn't turn up any more the madness
tripled.
The truck went outside the gate and for a moment I felt
like I was back on the road again. How wonderful it felt to go back to
that place in my mind for a moment. Just chipping behind the truck in
April at a J'ouvert fete was just enough to hold me over until the next
time and it gave me another taste of what j'ouvert is like with the GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band.
From the initial moments of j'ouvert, to the section preview, to taking the truck on the road -- this night was awesome.
I remember when my crew and I returned to the car all we could say was, "Tonight was awesome."
==============
Closing
==============
The
only thing that I wish could have been done differently is if they
would have ended the J'ouvert at 6am or 7am so that we could be there
when the sun comes up. That's one of the parts that I love the best
about J'ouvert and during Miami Carnival, when J'ouvert starts, the sun it
already up. So it's difficult to get that same feeling that you get in
TNT. During the GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band Launch there was a part of me that just
wasn't ready for the night to end just yet. I guess that's great way to
end it but, I wanted a little bit more. I was having the time of my
life.
I can't wait to play with the GenXRedAntz J'ouvert Band in October.
