Despite not qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the Reggae Boyz united Jamaica
Thursday, November 20 – Kingston, Jamaica: In a sea of gold and green, Jamaicans of all walks of life united on Wednesday November 19 for one common goal: to cheer on the Reggae Boyz on their journey to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Before his prayer at the start of the match, Rev Al Miller said: "With all the crime and violence that is rocking our nation, it is a beautiful sight to see all united tonight as we enter into this crucial match."
Reggae Boyz supporter, Anthony, commented on his reason for attending Reggae Boyz' matches: "I come to support my country. The thing I enjoy the most is seeing Jamaicans from all over come together as one. It is a beautiful thing and should happen more often."
Female supporter, Stephanie also commented: "Tonight it matters not if you are from uptown or downtown, all that matters is that we are Jamaicans and as Jamaicans we all want to see the Reggae Boyz win. It is a shame we will not qualify for the World Cup but at the end of the day we saw a quality match played by quality players and I am proud of my Reggae Boyz."
Melanie, a first time spectator, stated her reason for attending last night's match: "I come for the fun of the match. I always hear about how much fun it is and tonight the vibe is wicked. I don't understand football but I love it anyway."
The "wicked" vibe Melanie speaks of is the two hours of base pumping music played before the start of each match and the energetic half time show compliments of Reggae Boyz sponsor, Digicel. Not to mention the unity of the crowd as they come together to chant, stamp and cheer on the Reggae Boyz.
Despite not qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, The Reggae Boyz gave their fans the win they came to see and the quality football Jamaicans have come to expect from their Boyz. The Reggae Boyz will get a chance to once again show their skill in December when they play in the Finals of the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Jamaica.
