Captain’s Log: Wednesday 27th July, 2011. Liat flight #304 POS to BGI (with a stopover in Grenada) set to depart at 8:20AM.... it’s CROP OVER time!
Touched down in Bim Rock about an hour or so later than scheduled time, but no worries... de Camel was landing from Martinique around the same time. Collected our ride from Courtesy Rent-a-Car, made a quick stop for a bite at Chefette’s in Oistins and then checked into the brand new Marriott Courtyard in Christ Church.
On Crop Over Wednesday the big fete on the night is Wadadah, but we chose to check out Harbour Lights Beach Extravaganza. It’s a sexy crowd in an intimate venue, and tonight you’re getting all the best live local entertainment for the season in ONE spot! And there’s a bonus too... it’s FREE DRINKS (well until 2AM)!
And since we didn’t get the memo, we pulled up at Lights after 1AM. So besides having to double time on drinks before the cut off time, we quickly realized that most of the performances were over. Rupee, who’s having a fantastic Crop Over season, was just getting off stage. But we did manage to catch up with Mr. Rupert Clarke along with the rest of local stars before Lil Rick aka Ricky Minaj for 2011 (the man have too many aliases for me to start naming out) took to the stage and simply ripped it up.
His 2011 contributions was enough ammunition to fill his set. I cannot even recall if we went dung “Go Dung”, but we did “Work (Rich Boy Riddim)” before shouting “Eh Yo”. But it was clear from Day 1 in Bim that “Jones & Wukup (Charlie Sheen Riddim)” was going to be one of the biggest party songs for the season (and beyond ... we talking all 2011 carnivals going into 2012 Trinidad Carnival). In typical Lil’ Rick fashion, he took “jones-ing” to a whole new level (while wukking up of course).
After the performances, the deejay took over and the party continued until it was time to call it quits.
Wait, it’s almost cut off hour... “Bartender, two rounds of drinks please!”
Dre aka Chooky Minaj ... out!
