So this was my first wet fete (yes I know I’m lame for admitting it) but what I have no shame in admitting, is that it was one of the best sleepless nights that I have had so far. I could probably reach the word limit talking about everything that went down in the 12 hour period that I was actually there…but what happens within the ply board walls of wet fete….stays within the ply board walls of wet fete.
There is of course stuff that I can tell you, like the unbelievably stocked bar that was cracking cases of Stag and Carib into coolers of ice like eggs into a bowl. Then, for those who spent all their money getting their ticket at the door, the Lucozade girls gave a sight for sore eyes, and a free drink for dry throat. If of course you were all good on drinks and chaser and might have gotten a little hungry, you was covered there too. Holiday Snacks brought out the mobile unit and had free samples ( grainz addicts rejoice). For the paying customers though, there were a variety of local food stall operators which included the Barcode crew, who were pumping out their famous Barcode Burgers and wings by the dozens.
But enough about food, let’s talk about ‘De World Boss.’ The headlining performer for this year’s Sandbox Wet Fete was none other than Jamaican Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel who, In my opinion, gave a performance that simply couldn’t disappoint. After being opened for by fellow empire artiste, Shawn Storm, who was experiencing his first visit to Tobago, Kartel ( who is no stranger to the Island) started to perform a medley of his recent hits with the help of other Portmore Empire artistes such as ‘Gaza Slim,’ ‘Gaza Indu’ and ‘Sheba.’ His performance went on for well over TWO HOURS and had the crowd chanting every lyric of every verse of every song, he even had a little helper from the audience who surprised him with how well she was able to recite the particular song. Coming to the end of his time was when the Hoses got fired up, which leads me to my next point.
What is a WET FETE without water?!
Just before sunrise, 20,000 gallons of water came bearing down on the crown from both the side and front of the stage soaking everyone and everything in sight! This of course did nothing but to intensify the vibe as all hell broke loose. As Vybz Kartel’s performance ended the local Djs set a blaze for the water to try to cool by playing hit after hit. This continued until the sun came up, which unlike in other fetes, stopped nothing. Partying continued well into the mid-day with the water drying up, but the vibe never diminishing. All in all, some could handle it, others couldn’t but I can’t wait until next year, and this time, it’s from Wednesday straight into Monday…. TJJ straight!
