Sand, sea, blue skies and Red Bull Flugtag!!! All the ingredients required for a true island party.
For the first time ever, and very much anticipated, the event was held at Williams Bay, Chaguaramas, Trinidad. Approximately 20,000 patrons flocked to the event from as early as 5:00am to witness some odd 40 or so participants defy gravity and try to break the world record flugtag flying distance of 207 feet.
Despite the traffic, TJJ made it to the event in good time to witness the patrons having a time and the flugtags take their flight. At this point, only three words could be said ‘loooook at people!!!’ There were people on the shore, in the water, in boats, yachts, kayaks; as far as you could see. A carnival fete never drew such a crown down to the West. Even one of the premier party spots, and where the event participants were converged, Pier 1, was crowded.
As the competition progressed we saw flugtags of all dimensions, colours and sizes. We saw flugtags built the shape of women, teeth, birds, planes and the crowd’s favorite, a corbeaux. The skits performed by the team members were hilarious and included from dancing to fight-downs ... overall, general comic relief from the hot blazing sun. We also saw corbeauxs being released into the sky, much to the amusement of the patrons.
While the patrons had their fun, the participants enjoyed their part as well. TJJ spoke to one of the team members of the Bryden’s Team, who indicated that while their flugtag didn’t make it very far off the ramp before plummeting, they had fun diving into the water. This team took 1 month to build their flugtag and it was a team building activity by the liquor department of the company.
Local media personalities JW & Blaze kept the crowd enticed with their raw humor. The panel of celebrity judges included soca stars Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez, Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam and a host of others. Their job could not have been an easy one. However, with 142.5 point team Obi Wanted came in first, followed by team Tattoo Inc. Flight Club with 117 points and in third place was team Emancipation.
Overall, the event was injury free and fun – all participants walked away without any bruises and a sense of accomplishment for trying. Patrons enjoyed themselves drinking Red Bull and dancing to party music. While the world record was not broken, a collective breath was held when the winner’s craft flew off the ramp for an outstanding 52 feet, the longest flight of the day!!! And Trinidad now joins the list of countries where this event has been held.

Well the Powerline Sounds HD crew was there & I must say that the traffic was horrendous and there were actually three drownings that day because people took fishing boats to try and avert the traffic. So sadly you can not say that the event was injury free because three people loss there life. Also, it was very upsetting to see sooooo much trash everywhere & not a single trash can in site, and we walked from one side of the event to the other checking out the vibes and not one trash can. I believe that the promoters could have done a better job at organizing with the water taxis to help with transportation and also could have been more responsible at providing trash bins and clean up crews and I don't believe there were enough food vendors for the amount of people because the lines were a mess. I think the over all concept was good and it was very interesting but the event really could have been improved to avoid the above mentioned issues. It was soo crowded we didn't even see our tjj fam out there but the pics are great!
