Continuing to deliver coverage of all the choice carnival fetes for 2011, we had a busy night hitting up both Bishop's All Inclusive and Wicked in White (WIW) ... starting to feel like we eh go get to stay home till April! We rolled up in de Oval something after 12am, and the party was ram! Somewhere around 3000+ people was pumping, waving, wining & drinking ... ohh laaaaaawd oye! So we get to work one time checking out who was wearing what ... who was on stage ... and why year after year Wicked In White continues to be a must for the season.
Firstly, everyone definitely got the memo that it’s a must wear white fete. As always, some wore it better than others. Kudos to all the bootylicious ladies (and men) who have the confidence to wear certain things, but have mercy on us ... some of those tops were stretched to bursting trying to accommodate bellies, while I see some pants that was clinging on for dear life. Destiny's Child was right ... “I don't think I was ready to handle all that jelly”.
On the other hand, 'white pants tight' was working out very well for others. We see plenty BESS tings in the standard shorts and buff fellahs in tight white shirts ... Trinidadians never disappoint! The most outstanding character for the night though wasn't any smallie wearing pum pum shorts, but a man covered from head to toe in red, black and white and selling flags. Sweet Juice beg and beg for an interview but was enthusiastically denied with nervous explanations of 'I am a wanted man!!' Criminals hiding out at Wicked in White now??!! Not really!! He further went on to explain that his women didn't know where he was tonight, so he can't be on TV. Clearly he knew Wicked in White was the place to see and be seen!
Next up we spot the massive 'CORN SOUP' sign, and headed over to check out the eats available for the night. Corn soup, wing, fries, jerk, gyros, hot dogs etc. Standard fete fare but with more choice than we've seen for a while. Everything looked good and seemed well-priced and whether due to the late hour or very efficient service, there was very little line up to be served.
And now leaving the best for last ... I have NEVER seen so many local celebrities in one location. There were performances by Kes The Band, Destra & her Band, Super Jigga TC, Swappi, Shal Marshall, Screws, Tallpree, Skinny Fabulous and Hollywood Sachy. We also spotted Blaxx, Chinese Laundry and the godfather himself, Machel up in the back stage area mingling. Sweet Juice was carded to interview the latter (in HD of course) but was overcome with the inability to speak in an octave that was perceptible to human ears.
Now this always raises some tempers when we say it, but once again, as groundbreaking as Machel is, there are other artistes who have been trying very hard to build up a reputation that he has, and has been consistently coming up every year. Kes, Shal and Blaxx we talking about allyuh! As usual with real energetic performances worth all the hype, and songs that have the whole Caribbean going, the masses were definitely entertained all night long.
Shal and Swappi always remind me of grasshoppers the way they continuously jump all over the stage ... energy can't done! And anybody else find Swappi silver hair and beard a bit like a Soca Santa Claus???!!! Kes probably has some of the most attractive backup dancers, but sometimes they're a bit too much for small stages. Speaking on behalf of female partygoers, we want to be able to take in the sights when Kes inevitably pulls off his shirt during his second song; not scramble all over each other to see through the throng of backup dancers.
Speaking of which, Destra arrived in a bad-ass white suit with a dred Mohawk. Definitely a BESS outfit for the night! We heard she was a bit sick but from the way she had the crowd going, you really couldn't tell. You could see why this lady is a veteran. As we were leaving we hear Skinny grumbling about being kicked out of his dressing room. Apparently nobody recognizes him without his signature white shades and hat or what??!! We didn't get to see him perform but like Tallpree, our Caribbean brothers are on par with the immense Trini soca talent. Machel might still rule Carnival but he getting some very worthy competition.
Also with so many performances lined up from the time we arrived, we didn't really get a chance to focus on what the DJs were spinning, but from the way the crowd was pumped, it's probably safe to say they were doing a good job! Party surprisingly wrapped up at exactly 3.30am. It was a mad rush to remember where you parked your car while also hoping that you didn’t get wrecked, but everyone definitely left real hyped. WIW will remain a Carnival must on my list.
Stay tuned for TJJ TV video coverage of Wicked in White 2011 dropping sometime soon!
