A Golden Anniversary for UWI
My … my, how time flies! Imagine UWI St Augustine Campus is celebrating 50 years already! Being called “50 – The Jubilee”, the campus hosted a week of activities in celebration and commemoration of its fiftieth anniversary. These festivities ran from the 10th to 17th of October, 2010, and took place through a series of title events themed Exhibition, Inter-Faith Service, Panel Discussion – ‘The Future of the University’, Book Launch – From Imperical College to University of the West Indies and ‘The Gathering’ – All Inclusive Fete.
Well today TJJ was at the grounds of the campus’s Principal’s Office, to part take in the event that was planned to culminate the anniversary’s celebrations. An All Inclusive gala called “The Gathering” which was scheduled to run from noon to 7pm. Yup … seven hours of music, food, drink and nice people! It’s going to be a time!
Well our team rolled in at different times during the course of the event, and was fortunate to catch live performances from Karma with Ravi B, as well as Roy Cape with Blaxx, who also was the closing act of the evening’s live onstage performances.
Now if patrons weren’t waving and wining in front the stage to the sounds of sweet soca, then they were probably browsing the venue in search of what this All Inclusive had to offer. This was a task in itself as everywhere you turned a booth, tent or station was set up offering patrons something to eat or drink. Those who didn’t have quite a large stomach had to be extra particular as such, wisely selecting the items they wanted eat and drink … lol! On the other hand, you know there are going to be those who seem as though “their belly cah buss”, and who came to sample everything they set their eyes on. Well we tried a bit of the latter but trust us … there was too much variety in this All Inclusive for us to try everything
We partied amongst the crowd which consisted of a wide age demographic. However, it seemed to have a slightly greater concentration around the mid 40’s to 50’s age bracket. Many dignitaries and prominent folks came to part take in this grand affair. Persons like the honorable President George Maxwell Richards and his lovely wife, the Minister of Education, Dr Tim Gopeesingh and then as expected, many senior and high ranking members of the UWI staff. Looks like lots of top guns were present here today people!
Before we knew it 7 PM soon came and things started to unwind. The DJ music stopped and allowed the rhythm section to pick up the pace, slowly luring folks out of the venue and towards the parking area. Some chipped to the music while other chipped away, wishing the evening would go on a bit longer as they continued conversations inside. As the saying goes however … “All good things must come to an end” and so with lots of goodbyes, thanks and farewells we too took note and safely departed. Happy 50th Anniversary UWI!!
