It is what I have been waiting for since I landed on Friday; It is the dream come through for me to experience another European Carnival Parade; It has been anticipated since I left Berlin 2010 Carnival; It has been really an inspirational and exciting journey thus far ... I think I carried this on too long now ...
Rotterdam Summer Carnival Parade is one of numerous carnivals around europe and traditionally it is like any carnival parade of cultures. So let me give you a run down of what you going to get and what you going to see ...
A road ... A route ... thats correct! We must have a route on the roads of rotterdam! As most carnival chasers are accustom to one route with a starting point and usually an ending point somewhere else in the city where we are parading. However, with Rotterdam, and similar to Notting Hill - the route is like one big track - you start at point A and you end at point A. Kudos! makes it easy to find people, makes it easy to jump from truck to truck, and also makes it easy not to get lost!
Trucks ... oh yeah ... music trucks ... music trucks galore ... what kind of music? Well ... whatever you could imagine! From Silence to Talking to Jazz to Salsa to Chinese to of course Calypso/Soca ... you must hear a soca tune in a Carnival ... it would not be a carnival without it ... what do you think?
Costumes ... my oh my ... I saw it all in Rotterdam ... the brazilian samba sexiful ladies, the spanish salsa ladies in their tutus, the africans with the tiger and leopard face paintings, the chinese with their faces covered in make up and ravishing animal costumes, the pageant like bikini clad costumes that various people wore, and of course we must have straight from Trinidad, Spice mas 2010 costumes for the band TriniConnections.
I took the liberty of jumping up with the one defined Soca truck for Rotterdam Carnival - TriniConnections - who also had a connection with next level PoisonUK.
The costumes themselves were a handful of the collection from Spice Mas 2010 presentation from Trinidad and they were brought to rotterdam by the fabulous Joyce Warner. PoisonUK had a small section with the truck - more of a fun mas section with a jersey to jump up and wine in and you will get all the drinks in the world and food at the end of the shenanigans. I must make a special note here to that drinks truck for Trini Connections ... it was well manned with two people for its size ... two very friendly people ... who even took a chip and when some one wanted a drink they would serve them ... the drinks truck gets a big kudos! All drinkers ... be advised ... drinks truck for Trini Connections ... well staffed!
The Vibes on the day in TriniConnections were remarkable. I am convinced now more than ever that people in europe really enjoy the caribbean culture if not as much but more than actual caribbean people themselves. With the likes of D-One Jammasters, K-Marvel, Diesel, Bliss, Smokey Joe & DJ Tate on the TriniConnections Truck ... what kind of vibe would you expect? Oh ... the most disgusting and entertaining vibes ever!!! You could not stop dance! You could not stop look for a batty to wine on! The drinks truck was it working? Oh yeah!!! It did not even buss!!!! .... it had drinks for hours, for days, it had drinks all up until we were sitting down at the meeting point eating some crusty dry chicken!
On a wetter note, the weather in rotterdam was wonderful ... for me! lol ... No strong heated sun ... nothing to burn you until you sweating all over and all down in your socks ... no it was cool ... it was really really cool ... I loved the weather and then the rain , the drizzles, the water from the sky that makes people really release that inner beast, that wild demon that loves to wine all over the place, that loves to squeeze a bottom ... jirate yuh batty all hours of the night ... what is it about rain that drives people so crazy? ... debatable? I think not!
Rotterdam Carnival 2010 ... TriniConnections Truck ... true soca lovers, people of all sorts, all togetherness, all the love in the world!
2011 ... will you be there?
