8:00AM - Carnival Tuesday in St. Lucia: cricket, cricket, cricket...
10:00AM - Carnival Tuesday in St. Lucia: cricket, cricket, cricket...
Might as well turn over again and drift back into dreamland till 11am since the time to meet the bands on the second day of the jump up is at (brace yourself!) ... 12:30PM!!!
Plenty time to take care of your hangover from the day before and get dressed without time pressure. So put on whatever is left of your costume and head to Caribbean Cinemas, the meeting point for all 13 Lucian Mas bands.
By about 1:30pm the trucks started blasting local Soca tunes and masqueraders quickly recharged with some snacks/lunch provided by their respective bands. Now it was time to warm up, and the vibe definitely reached it's boiling point at the Vigie round-a-bout where revellers went crazy and circled in good old tradition about 10 times. (Don’t make the same mistake like me and start running in the opposite direction ... steups)
Tracks like "Pas Mele", "Cadillac", "Okay Dere" and "Push Dem" were hyping up the crowd, and if there's one thing, Lucian's take instructions by the Soca artists seriously. If they say "Mind you go and fall so!" ... they will literally fall on the ground ... PRESSHA OVERLOAD!!
Thanks to mother nature, plenty rain cooled down the band members several times through out the day. And for additional slipperiness, some of the trucks provided foam showers.
Some Lucian revelers have the habit of carrying unique drinking apparatuses like kettles, 'piss pots' and totot shaped mugs. The prize for most disgusting one definitely went to the owner of the toilet brush in it's holder ... he sipped Rum & Coke all day out of this hopefully brand new "cup".
Generally I would say the masqueraders were nice to look at, the ladies made an effort with make up and hair and posed (wine up) nicely in front of the TJJ cameras.
St. Lucia Carnival is definitely suitable for Carnival beginners; the crowd is not too rough and the duration of the two jump ups is manageable for starters. On Tuesday the parade ends around 6PM, which allows a cool-down at a local bar or you can continue the madness at an after party such as Rituals Last Lap at Samaans.
