>> View St. Lucia J'ouvert 2010 Gallery>> View St. Lucia 2010 Carnival Coverage Okay folks... we're done with this dressing up and looking pretty thing, we now feel for sticky paint, moist brown mud and loooots of drinks while the sun comes up... mix that with a bit of chippin' and you will have a good time on the streets of downtown Castries.
As usual we ran a bit late, reaching town close to 6AM, but it wasn't an issue since our band -
Bad Company Back "N" Time J'Ouvert Band - had some technical difficulties with the music truck. Hey... their revellers didn't mind; they started drinking anyway!
The band left from the Hardest Hard Restaurant & Bar at La Toc Road, which according to Daddy Juice has the besssss local food on the whole island. The Back "N" Time band's theme for 2010 was
"School Days Was Happy Days" and quite a few band members were portraying this theme beautifully with ponytails, school uniforms and accessories like note pads, ABC spelling boards and canes (lol).
Depending on your j'ouvert shirt color you belonged to a certain "classroom", and to my surprise, it was strongly enforced by the elder women in the band.
"Hello! Girl you in the white shirt... could you go to your classroom now which is in front the truck, stop talking to your friends in the yellow uniforms!" Wow and I thought we are here to have fun? :-)
Anyways, I guess by putting their foot down, those wannabe teachers actually did a good job since our band made quite an impression in front of the judges and won "J'Ouvert Band of the Year" title. But after time went by and liquor got in everyone's veins this whole classroom division was forgotten and people mixed among the different bands. Bad Company was quite clean... didn't have paint or mud but most of us managed somehow to get messy by either hugging
"Mudsters" revellers or dancing with locals that were equipped with gallons of white wall paint!
Besides swinging a rubber blow up doll around and starting a "watch-I-can-dance-with-a-full-cup-on my-head-competition", I must say we were well behaved. All in all, it was a nice j'ouvert (for $100EC) with a nice selection of drinks and lots of old school soca, it didn't get too outrageous (due to the fact that quite a large amount of members was quite... erm... OLD! Yesss I said it, and I am not talking 35-45 here now), so we were able to save some (yes, our tanks are running on the red light) energy for Monday's jump up.
