New York, New York -- April 1, 2010 -- Irish and Chin once again made history, as record breaking numbers of rub-a-dub fans turned out to "Reeewind & Come Again." Thousands inundated Amazura to take in the vibes of a super line-up that included Ranking Joe, Brigadier Jerry, Barrington Levy, Frankie Paul, Admiral Bailey, Shabba Ranks, Tiger and numerous surprise guests performing live on King Stur Gav. It is estimated that at least half the crowd traveled from outside the New York area. The crowd was so enormous that police shut down the gate prematurely, leaving some outside.
Road International provided a strong early, early warm segment. Their smooth set was followed by Mighty Crown "The Far East Rulers," who enchanted the crowd with a wide array of rub-a-dub and lover's rock selections. The audience rocked to the infectious sounds of Sanchez, Garnett Silk, Cocoa Tea, among many others. The mood was set just right for the heavy show that followed. By 1:00 AM, the original King Stur Gav deejay Ranking Joe touched the stage. Fans received Ranking Joe well, as he chatted over King Stur Gav's relentless riddims. Ranking Joe's delivery was flawless, as expected.
Frankie Paul took over the stage. His slick vocals cascaded over Stur Gav's riddims perfectly. At points during his performance, fans sang the lyrics to his verses. The crowd roared when Brigadier Jerry hit the stage. A favorite of all in attendance, Brigadier Jerry rocked the crowd with his freestyle toasts. Another King Stur Gav star, Brigadier Jerry wooed his followers. Brigadier never disappoints his fans.
Barrington Levy sang over riddims and a capella. His vocals were piercing. The crowd went crazy when the vocalist dropped "Black Roses" and "My Woman." Admiral Bailey was up next. The deejay thrilled the audience as he dropped favorites and freestyle over the riddims. Shabba Ranks joined Admiral Bailey on stage and delivered a high energy set. At one point, Shabba and Admiral Bailey did a one for one exchange, which was interjected by dancehall legend Tiger. Shabba's solo time on the mic was explosive. He tried to make up for lost time during his segment.
The night's true and inspirational highlight was definitely the return of Tiger. The deejay performed a short but sweet set of dancehall classics. According to Tiger, it's been 16 years since he last performed in New York. Fans heralded Tiger as a true champion, given his miraculous comeback after a near death accident in 1994. At the close of the show, Tiger was praised by the MC and the crowd for his courage and strength.
There were a number of celebrities in the building, including Michael Palmer (who was called out by Tiger to perform a selection), Jr. Demus (who delivered a brief comedic performance), Mikey Jarrett and Johnny Osbourne. The event ultimately reached star studded status when special guest Sean Paul came on stage. It was certainly a pleasure to see the comradery of members of the Reggae music fraternity. "Reeewind & Come Again" exceeded expectations. While the event did experience some kinks, Irish and Chin has solidified the "Reeewind" brand as a vehicle of highlighting foundation artists and sound system culture.
