So... summer has officially started in Bim! Whitsun weekend (May 30th and 31st) was the highly anticipated SOL Rally Barbados 2009 (www.rallybarbados.bb). Rally enthusiasts along with the rally limers (aka me) drove from around Bim and flew in from across the world for this premier event organised by the Barbados Rally Club. Arguably the largest spectator sport in Barbados, rally motor sports has evolved greatly over its 52 year history on the island. What started out with standard local cars haphazardly navigating their way around the island's prolific road network has grown into a motor sport culture that can be considered second to none in the region. Locations such as Sailor Gully, Vaucluse and Bushy Park have been catapulted from fallowed cane fields to instantly recognisable motor sport venues!
In it's 20 year history the rally has expanded exponentially and local favourites such, Paul 'The Surfer' Bourne, Roger 'The Sheriff' Skeete and Trevor 'Electric Micey' Manning. In addition to competing against the local rally driver circuit, these rally greats have to contend with regional heavy hitters like Jeffory Patton out of Jamaica, and also international drivers from the UK and Europe. For the second year in a row Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle of Ireland landed the title of the winner of SOL Rally Barbados driving the Digicel/Red Bull/ARMAG Subaru Impreza WRC S9. A true rally driver, this man definitely earned this title. Not so much into motorsports? Have a hard time telling the difference between a Subaru and a Suzuki parked at a gas station, much less screaming by at 100KMH?! Fear not, the event by its very nature is an excuse to lime. So bring your cooler, cutters, jerk chicken or doubles and be sure to catch the next Rally Barbados!! Nick aka De Red Sno Cone Juice |
