After a jammed packed Memorial Day weekend that was almost devoid of any Soca, to say we were looking forward to this episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S would be an understatement. A live performance by one of Soca’s hottest stars was just what the doctor ordered, and Benjai more than fits that bill. For carnival 2009, he shared the stage with both the Asylum Band and Mr. HD himself and we already knew he was one of the best lyricist around.

This month we walked up in the dance from early o’clock; nothing worse than standing online outside only to hear the artist on the mic and the crowd roaring, while the person in front of you tries to explain why they don’t have their ID with them. One the inside, all the early arrivers were hanging by the bars and C.I.Dee Sound was warming things up. Sosta had been transformed into a performance venue with stage and stage lighting, really setting the mood and the expectations.

Then when Benjai himself walked up and in the dance, we knew it wouldn't be long now. This was about the same time House Arrest got on the stage and turned things up a notch, raising the tempo. Sosta was now filled with regulars and many new faces, and around 2:30AM it was SHOWTIME!

Benjai emerged from the VIP area and got right down to mashing up the dance straight away... ”Clear d way clear d way clear d way for me!!!” Because of the small size of Sosta Lounge, the crowd is able to get closer than they normally would, so it makes for a much more up close and personal performance, and thus far every live performance at F.R.I.E.N.D.S has been off da chain, starting with Mr. Slaughter for MIA Carnival 2007 (see coverage) and Iwer and S.K.H.I for MIA Carnival 2008 (see coverage), following in this trend Benjai did not disappoint. He performed about 11 of his hits, including the smash "Drunk Again". After the show it was back to C.I.Dee and House Arrest to keep the vibes going.

Benjai stuck around and enjoyed the rest of the party, and he really did seem to be enjoying it, accommodating everyone that wanted to visit him in the VIP to say hi or get a picture taken. As usual, a good time was had by all, and we gonna be heading back to Sosta on July 4th to make sure we get our 'Soca Fix' for the holiday weekend!
