What’s up people, Lece here reporting to you another fantastic event which I attended, Machel Montano’s "Boy Boy & The Magical Drum". It was a theatrical performance, with props, costumes and the whole nine yards. In my opinion, when you think of Machel expect nothing but the ultimate experience.

There was heavy security including K9s and the fire service for the safety of the children and adults. Juices, water, rags and cups were given out when entering the gates. It was very organized except for the kickoff time. The show started about a half an hour late, but surprisingly no one was complaining. So it’s 6:30pm now and two carnival characters are hoisted into the air by cranes. Later I figured out that these were the story tellers. A little scary, but impressive. They were the same height as the roof of the covered stands ... “talk about belly”.

Now, everyone was seated calmly, so I decided to make my way to the front of the stage to get a better view before things started. Upon the first note to the song "Higher Than High" there was a flood of children and parents. I can honestly tell you that I was scared for my life because they were coming towards me. The children were screaming and waving their rags. Now some of these children are about 3 to 4 feet tall and I am 5' 7”. Can you imagine these kids waving their rags with me right next to them? I was getting slapped, pushed .. dare I say assaulted. Then the thing that got me a bit more aggravated was when "Big Truck" started to play they climbed the scaffolding. The children ...... climbed ....... the ....... scaffolding. They were mouthing the words to every song and winning more than me. Are you kidding me.. children mimic what they see right??!! With hundreds of children and parents in attendance, I was basically sandwiched to the front of the barricade.

The performers were children and they were effervescent. Talent can only describe what these children possessed. Dancers from the Carol La Chapelle Dance company were the performers of the night from ages 3+. An array of the costumes colour painted the stage; every child had a part to play. What awed me even more were the solo’s and the duets. A boy about 10 or 11 years old, singing flawlessly to notes only women can make. Boy Boy accompanied by Machel sang “Too Young to Soca” and so much more. But of course, the HD family must have taken part.. Patrice Roberts, Zan, Farmer Nappy, Umi and even some guest performances by Len "Boogise" Sharpe and the Trinidad Youth Steel Orchestra.

The confetti filled air, ended the nights pulsating performances to raging screams and applause. It was really a well presented show. Props to everyone who put in their fingers, elbows, knees and toes to the night’s event, and the talk was the kids cannot wait for next year!

People, you know that I must remind you not to drink and drive. And if you must, please designate your driver so the kids don’t mimic everything that they see.

Lece,
for the Jungle Juice Family
