Tassa and Chutney as Alternative to Jazz

Tobago Tobago!!!! TJJ is here and so is a new concept. The Annual Plymouth Jazz Festival (see last year's coverage) has been cancelled this year, but no scene, there's an alternative to jazz - four nights of partying at The Shade as this was "The Alternative to Jazz", not forgetting the extras and bonuses included.

Things kicked off at the "Welcome Party" which offered free entry to the club. Rhythms and melodies mixed as patrons enjoyed a night full of excitement with different cocktails to choose from. The "4th Anniversary Party", but with a twist, was held on the Friday. X-caliber, Players International, Mighty Crush and Dreads International were on the one's and two's selecting a combination from Dancehall, Soca, Hip Hop to even Latin; all well received by the crowd.

The ladies, dressed swanky and looking fiery, filled the club, and the guys were just sipping on their Guinness as they awaited the right moment to make their move. What made this night extra special was reggae star Maxi Priest (photo, right) checking out the vibes to see how we Trinbagonian's partied.

The night was still young, as we got word of a J'Ouvert at Plymouth (Street Beat). Quite different from our regular J'Ouvert, as this one was more traditional. Skits, drums, moko jumbles, and donkey men made up the Street Beat.

"Island Vibes" held on the Saturday was out of the extraordinary, and was a first. Tassa and Chutney at The Shade was a taste of a diverse culture as tassa began about 1AM, followed by chutney artist Hunter who performed "Jep Sting Naina" and "Bring It". It was quite a culture shock for the Tobagonian's, but the Trini's were quite familiar. The tassa group played in the middle of the crowd while Hunter performed. It was such a good combination and added to the excitement.

Following this performance Hollywood Satchy, DJ Gilligan and Red changed the vibes. Uptown music, Alternative, Rave, Soca and Dancehall truly added to this night. Not forgetting the vinyl's that was set up in the corner of the VIP, which reminded folks of the good ole days of records.

This weekend was truly an alternative to jazz, with the mixture of music that represented different ethnic styles.
