Trini Jungle Juice hasn't been up in the Woodford Café for a hot minute now, well since TJJ's Keyz went foreign pon tour last summer. So when we heard the iron man from Tobago, Shurwayne Winchester, was going to be the 1st artist to perform for the Café's 1st of Unplugged Tuesdays for 2008, it was "A" for action. It's a Tuesday night, so 9:30pm/10pm seem like a good time to arrive. But at this time, one would have no clue that any performances were going to take place, since the stage area wasn't set up and place was not filled with people. You had folks at the bar and others enjoying the cafe's dining experience. We must mention that the local cuisine is actually pretty good. At the end of the night we able to finally sit down and enjoy a nice plate of stew lamb with macaroni pie and some cassava fried with a kinda garlic butter sauce.... yum yum! Now all questioning if Shurwayne was really going to perform came to an end when we saw him liming outside waiting for things to get set up. But wait, is that Shurwayne? We almost didn't make him out with his new look. Yes, he has cut off all his hair... no more braids!! He says it's a part of his new image for 2008, and change is a big part of the entertainment game. Looking good Shurwayne! At about 10:50pm, Witney of WIN TV welcomed everyone and introduced Shurwayne to the stage. We must admit that we were a little disappointed at first when we saw that Shurwayne was not going to be accompanied by a live band... to give that true unplugged feeling. However, accompanied by a DJ, Winchester still give his usual high energy performance (climbing up next to the speaker box 'n all) and had the majority of the unplugged crowd jammin'... especially a crew of ladies (looked like foreigners) who where having ah ball. "Carnival Please Stay" and "Whole Day" seem to be the popular songs for this year, but Winchester did a nice job blending in all his popular hits from past years ("Open The Gate", "Woman By My Side (Remix)", "Don't Stop", "Can't Wait" and "Dead Or Alive") to the crowd's delight. After about a 30 minute performance, the Soca star took photos with is fans and signed autographs. The entire Woodford Café kitchen staff even joined in the action. Minutes after midnight, we gave our now clean food plate to the kitchen, and exited as folks mingled and enjoyed some more drinks to the sweet sounds of Soca.
