Below is a correspondence
letter between the chief of staff Ron Nelson (Commissioner Marc Sarnoff staff

Subject: Special Events
We
need to take a look at Special Events and their happenings in
District 2. Right
now they have carte blanche when it comes to planning
events.
For example:
This
weekend on Virginia Key we have an event that starts at 10:00 p.m.
and runs
until 4:00 a.m. with alcohol and DJs playing Hip Hop and
Caribbean Music.
It could go well, but with this formula there is a real
chance for problems
with noise, intoxication, disorderly conduct,
traffic, etc. We do not need
amplified music with alcohol until 4:00
a.m. in our parks
Then
on November 24th we have Island Fest with Ziggy Marley in Peacock
Park. In
years past this event has been held in Bicentennial Park or
Bayfront Park.
It has the potential to draw a very large crowd which is
too much for the park.
It is our understanding that it was moved to
Peacock Park because it is FREE
and the others would charge for such an
event. So, with no notice to the district
commissioner it was moved to
an area probably not appropriate for such a large
event.
Both
of these were planned without notice to this office, and now that
we have found
out about them we are very close to asking for
cancellation. We understand
that a lot of planning goes into these
events, but part of that planning needs
to be communication with the
affected district office at the onset.
