For well over a year now, Klimaxx Entertainment & East Coast Caribbean Events have been giving us Fresh Fete Fridays the 1st Friday of every month in Washington DC. So when they linked up with the Thief Head Crew (THC) to bring this sweet event to NYC, you know everyting cook up and curry!

On June 1st, it was not only "The Baby Blue Boatride After Party Edition", but it was also a new location for Fresh Fete NY, moving to Ultra nightclub (bet 6 Ave and Broadway). So it was straight from the boatride to Ultra, with a few text messages on the way so the rest of the TJJ NY Team could link up… "A" is for Action!

After getting a nice parking spot about 2 blocks away from the club (a rare find in Manhattan), we pulled up to the spot around 1AM. We must say, from the second we walked into the nightclub, we were very impressed with the layout and ambiance. A screen projection running across the top of the entire wall, a vine like décor hanging from the ceiling, funky paintings, sectioned lounge seating, VIP areas…. Ultra definitely had that NYC upscale style and feel to it. THC, if you all can get Ultra to show some West Indian flicks (Top Shottas, Dancehall Queen, Third World Cop, Belly) or some Kick Up flicks (Bruce Lee, Silver Fox, Kill Bill) on the wall, that would be wicked.

With about half the crowd flowing over from the "I Love Baby Blue Boat Ride", so did the energy. It wasn't too long before the dance was ram and everyone was jamming to the sound of System Lords International (SLI), Natural Freaks, DJ Spice and Back to Basics. All DJs provided a nice blend of music… Soca, Dancehall, Hip Hip, RnB and even some Old School. Vibes was so nice at one point, that shortly after the MC told all ladies to free up, shoes were off and smallies were dancing on the couches having ah time. Drinks were flowing all night, and the bottle service was a nice touch. You didn't even have to make a trip to the bar for a cocktail or beer of you didn't want to. One ting, Club Ultra…. allya need to correk that one beer (we cannot event remember the brand) situation fast! How could you not serve Heineken or Corona? Couldn't even get a Bud Light!! ;-)

THC thanks for rolling out the regular red carpet treatment. Dance was nice…. Ah mean, if there was no cut off time for the fete, West Indian people wasn't going home yes!

Oh, before we run…. some folks (we not calling any names) will tell ya that Brooklyn is the home to Soca outside of Trinidad, and that Soca has no business in Manhattan. We doh business. The truth of the matter is, how can we really promote our own culture if we staying in ah pigeon hole? We applaud all promoters that are playing a role in taking Soca and Caribbean entertainment as a whole to new places. We got to start treating Soca and our Caribbean culture like Star Trek…. exploring new worlds; seeking out new life and new civilizations and most importantly boldly going where no one has gone before!! Fresh Fete Fridays NY is most certainly a fresh, welcoming change!
