After a well worked marketing plan about Friday the 13th and "Jumbies in the Dark" we were all hyped up to head to Boy Scouts in St. Ann's to 'party like rockstars'. Known for its tricky parking situation, we decided to get there early and were rewarded with a 'Besss Park' not far from the entrance.
Getting inside was a snap and as true Trinis we were most delighted to be greeted not only by courteous staff but also by FREE stuff. From complimentary premium drinks to ice cream to glow in the dark chains ... we were set up for an enjoyable night.
However we would soon encounter a problem. With all due respect to the promoter and designer we believe they took the name of the party "DARK" ah bit too far. Patrons were made to feel there way through the pitch black walkway whilst trying not to knock over anyone else since we were all dressed in black. A bit more lighting, even if it were just for us to be able to navigate properly would have been greatly appreciated.
From the darkness into the light we settled with the early crowd in front the stage and took in the vibes. The music was kool and enough to get you moving sort of as a warm up for the rest of the night. The crowd was well mixed, from the grown and sexy to the schools out crews with many local celebrities in the mix including TV and Radio personalities, countless artistes and well known models with 90% of the audience dressed in black.
The energy in the party started to pick up when out of nowhere two MOKO JUMBIES and a FLAME BLOWER kicked things off. Soon the crowd started swelling and the party became alive with fun.
There was no shortage of lovely ladies present and we did our best to capture them all. After a healthy serving of Soca, the dancers amongst us were unleashed as an UGLY JUMBIE lead from in front doing everything from the Hot Wuk to the Chat 2 Mi Back. Not to be out done the guys made their name with the Tek Whey Yuhself and the Raging Bull with even the Moko Jumbies charging to and fro.
We were then "treated" to a somewhat poorly executed dancing competition on stage when none of the featured ladies could do the "Hula Hoop" with a hula hoop until we were saved by 2 ladies from the crowd. The first girl, who said she was from Toronto, put the original girls to shame but then the second one surely put Macka Diamond herself to shame as she hula hooped with her neck, arms, waist and feet much to the appreciation of the crowd.
The theme for the night was "Do It In The Dark" and you can trust us when we say that alot was done. But an old problem resurfaced..... the bathroom facilities were draped in unnecessary darkness (good thing ah had my glow in the dark chain or I may have had to cut my night short). This literally "Pissed Off" a number of patrons, but we got past it and continued having ah nice time.
The party took an interesting turn when at around 4 AM the DJs announced that everyone under the age of 25 should head for the exits before they unleashed an arsenal of "Rub-A-Dub" dancehall hits of the early 90s. We then took a last dance and did our step straight to the exit to end a beautiful night under the St. Ann's sky. (Maybe next time well swing by the madhouse to check out the Jumbies there.... lol.)
Happy Birthday to my good friend from back in school days Aneisha!!! Young Simmo for the TJJ fam. ==================================== |
