Tripped and Falling

So this doesn't sound like the normal event covered by TJJ, but when we heard Tripped and Falling (TAF), a rock band from Trinidad was playing their first gig here in London, we knew it had to be done. TAF already established themselves to the Trini market, having recent chart success including #1's on various local (Trinidad) radio stations, but have recently relocated to the UK for some international exposure.

The guys from TAF arrived here a couple of months ago (in de middle of winter) to begin another chapter in their career, promptly got a manager in the UK and their first 2 gigs lined up. The first was at the Dublin Castle, a pub in Camden which has long been established as an influential music venue in the London gig circuit (apparently anybody who is anybody has played here as some point), a great place for up and coming bands.

When we got dere, another band was on the stage, hidden at the back room of the pub, but there were a few Trinis liming in de front and more pouring in by the minute. In the end there was quite a good turnout, especially for Sunday night, and it was clear that a lot of people were looking forward to this ... and so was the band.

When TAF got on stage you can see the anticipation that was building for the last few months transform into pure energy. Their enthusiasm was amazing to watch as they rocked the house down performing approximately 10 of their songs, including crowd favourites "Bleed Victoria", "End is Now" and my favourite "Ashes and Ember". We must admit dat many of us up here have not been following the rock scene, local (Trini) or otherwise, but we came down in support of some home-grown talent ... and for d lime of course! ;-) But it was easy to see why everyone was jumping and singing along, some even moshing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosh). We even thought that a friend of ours, who is definitely not a rock aficionado must have been drunk ... as even he got carried away with the music and their electric performance, but he said he really enjoyed it.

Being a Sunday night, the lime after didn't last too long although some people stayed back for a few drinks. We didn't manage to get many pics but promised to make up for this at the second gig.

This next gig was a couple weeks later, hosted by Quiksilver Sessions, a monthly event which showcases unsigned bands in the UK. A newer venue, The Carling Bar Academy, which has also become important to the gig scene, was the location this time. TAF was already on stage by the time we reached (sorry Champions' League football was on!) but they had just started. The crowd was just about as much as at the Castle, but on looking around, we didn't see as many Trinis as the first one. It didn't matter though as TAF gave another good show, especially lead singer Chad (Affonso) who delivers quite a passionate performance and guitarist Barry (Bibby) sporting a mohawk who jumped off the stage and rocked from on top of the people bar!
