Yes Toronto after much anticipation the 11th Annual Return Fete thrown by Dr Jay (Soca Therapy) and the KOS (Kingdom Of Soca) family was finally upon us. Held at the very spacious Kool Haus to accommodate the 3000 expected fetegoers, it truly was no surprise that when TJJ arrived on the scene at 10pm the line up had already begun. Wow, Dis rounds people eh making joke!! Hoards of West Indians and other Soca music lovers braced freezing temperatures (it was real cold & windy), many hoping of relive the Carnival 2K6 experience or simply out to enjoy one of the biggest fetes of the year. In no time, TJJ was on the inside and after taking a minute to thaw out, we hit the bar and then proceeded to check out the vibes in and about the fete. The place seemed to be filling up at a quick pace and the crowd slowly got into fete mode with the help of Sir Phillips on the one's and two's. Ah mean yuh cyah go wrong with de sweet chippin tunes to loosen de waist!! Well if you thought that was ah sweet session, DJ's switched out and DJ MarXman was picking up where Sir Phillips left off and as Saucy Wow would say, "Come leh we do dat! Get on bad!" Well yes crowd was in full swing and party start! We must mention that both men with the steel - E Man & Dirty Dez did an amazing job in hyping up the crowd to some frenzied behaviour! Dis is not ah fete in here ... dis is madness!!! Of course when Dr Jay finally hit the turntables and start to pelt out the hottest Carnival tunes, well oh lawwdddddd people start to jump as if they crossing de stage in de savannah but wha yuh go do? De place hot, de tunes on fyah, yuh cyah fight it, jus smile nah! All dem woman in high heel shoe (we weren't sure what they were thinking either!! Ammm wrong party!!) ran for cover either to de back of de fete or to the elevated lounge fuss it was chaos ... FUN!! ... but chaos! It was about 12:45 AM when the first artist, Mista Vybe appeared on stage. Somebody say ONE, somebody say TWO, somebody say TREE (lol). Somebody say MASH UP DIS PARTEE! and with the crowd already rearing to go was greeted by a sea of rags & flags waving anxiously to the beat. During his performance, there was a surprise guest; the one and only Ms Alysha came out and mashed up the crowd with her freestyle ability and of course, singing her hit tune "Party." Next up and without further adieu Destra could be heard singing her hit tune "We Say sooo ... We Say Sooo ..." and in no time was on stage. As always Destra "Bam Bam" delivered an energetic performance; from her tantalizing moves when it came to singing her chuntey/soca hit "Aur Chale" to having the crowd wave their flags frantically with the tune "Jumpin." We get the feeling that some fetegoers were mildly disappointed as not all her songs were sang to their full entirety due to the fact that she will be back in Toronto with her full band Atlantik to perform again in May. Yes folks, if you haven't already heard SOCA OR DIE 4 is coming Victoria Day Long Weekend Sunday May 21st featuring Destra & Atlantik, Kes The Band and a surprise artist whose first performance for 2006 will be at SOCA OR DIE! TJJ does hook ya up with the nice info, ent! Now even after Destra sung her last song, she was brought back to the stage for an encore performance and this time bringing Shal Marshall from the well known Jugglers Sound Crew outta Trinidad. They sang their 2005 combination tune "Love Somebody," and once again had the crowd going. Last but not least, KMC took to the stage about 2 AM and continued to mash up the place. Lawd like we eh going home any time soon! Singing his hit tune from last year "First Experience," he actually had the crowd singing the words. We love it!! He also took us back in time with "Ah Don't Want to Know (If Ah Getting Horn!)," in addition to, "Bashment to Carnival." But we all know it was the big tune "3 Miles" that most people were anxious to hear, and so he delivered. It was about 3:30 AM when the fete came to an end and like us, the staff at Kool Haus were just as anxious to get home and into bed. The Return Fete was as expected ... great music and plenty vibes. The only negative feedback we heard was that there seemed to be too many people on the stage prohibiting the people off on the sides to view some of the performances clearly. Thanks to Dr Jay & The KOS Family for allowing TJJ to pass through and experience our first Return Fete (can you believe that). We have quickly caught up to speed and now know that Doh Cry An Leavin (DCAL) and The Return Fete are heavy weight fetes in the T-DOT. Doh stick! Corn Soup anyone? :-) |
