TJJ Fete Rating

It was a ruff stretch but somebody had to do it. Island People Black and White, then to Red Eye Breakfast Party, then to a family lime, grab a fresh and off to University Fete. Sleep? Wuh dat??!!

TJJ arrived on the FIU campus about 7PM, parking was easy and the crowd was massive. We were greeted at the entrance by the Angostura girls lined up on either side of the Red Carpet. Yes, you read that correctly, Red Carpet at the entrance! A quick stop to the bar revealed a large keg of coconut water and scotch was in abundance. That set the mood one time... a large variety of food was nicely presented and well positioned allowing patrons easy access. The same could be said for the bar. The venue was well lit with separate facilities for ladies and gents on opposite sides of the party. This might seem like a no brainer but you'd be surprised.

Backstage there was a separate bar (food and drinks) for the media and entertainers complete with very pleasant waitresses that were very easy on the eyes. :-) That was a very nice touch indeed. The evening was hosted by Miami's own Giselle the Wassy One. Code 868 had the crowd on a string early o'clock and set the mood for the rest of the event. One of the highlights of their set was a performance by an unknown artist who tore up the session with some big Sanchez tunes and conscious reggae. The shocker was that, well lets just say he looks more like Clay Aiken family than Bob Marley family.

They were followed by Shurwayne Winchester. No explanation needed about the Road March king two years in a row and his band's performance! They were joined on stage by the likes of Chutney artiste, Adesh Samaroo who also ripped the fete. The pace was kept blazin' with a tight performance by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires celebrating 50 years in the business. Byron Lee play some rum soca classics dey that was perfect timin'. Rikki Jai is hands down, one of the best in the business. A true entertainer, he has never let us down no matter where in world we have seen him perform... from London to Texas and everywhere in between. Eddie Charles, Leon Coldero and Roger George held their own, proving time and time again they ain't new to this. What sealed the deal, keeping the University fete as the heavyweight champ of All Inclusives in Miami, was when his Majesty, King David Michael Rudder graced the stage... "Oh Lavantee... Here We Come... Oh Lavanteee..." Absolutely pore raising!! Just when you thought it could not get any better, bradacks! D'original Fire Chief, Bunji Garlin and the Asylum Band hit the stage and took the fete to the end, which was about 1AM.

Now, the food bar buss kinda early, and Johnny buss early o'clock along with the coconut water keg. Doh tease grown folks with limited Johnny. If yuh havin' Johnny, make sure he walkin' whole night! All in all, we give this one a 4.5 out of 5 TJJ Rating. And we must throw in a TJJ Thumbs Up as this is the only event for the Miami Carnival that raises Scholarship funds for deserving students desiring to pursue a college education in the area of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University (FIU). Thanks for the hospitality University Fete and we'll see allyuh there next year!

--------- Message from The Angostura All Inclusive University Fete Committee ---------

The Angostura All Inclusive University Fete Committee will like to thank everyone that attended the 5th Anniversary of the "Event". We truly appreciated your support!! We would like to take this opportunity to clear up any misconceptions about the main food and drink bars running out of stock. Main food dishes were guaranteed until 10 PM, after which, finger foods were served until 12 midnight. Johnny Walker was one of the many premium drinks offered at the event, and in fact did not run out of stock, with us having to return cases at final inventory check. There may have been instances where food runners were changing shifts or the bars were being restocked, that lead folks to believe differ. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and we greatly appreciated your feedback, which we will be sure to incorporate in our future planning. We look forward to your continued support for next year's event.
