Date: Saturday 19th November 2005 Venue: Pete's Place, Toronto Promoters: Dr. Jay (Soca Therapy) Click on thumbnails to see the big picture/entire gallery It was yet another big fetein weekend in Toronto and Trini Jungle Juice was on the move. In the famous words of Dr. Jay, let's just start this one off with a "Aye Aye Ayeeeee, did someone say 3 big artists... Kerwin Du Bois, Mr DJ & Lil' Rick???!!" Then they must have been talking about Soca or Die! Pt 3, also featuring up and coming artist Miguel and the #1 DJ from Barbados, Peter Coppin of the Monsta Piece Crew. This Soca or Die installment was held at Pete's Place, and everyone was given advanced notice to dress to sweat! When we rolled up about twelve thirty-ish, we could tell de fete was already in full swing. If yuh see how far we had to park! But then again, this was Soca or Die! After catching up with the artists backstage, we made movements through the crowd capturing the vibe of the soca lovers in the house, and is ah good ting we took heed and dressed to sweat... de heat in de place was very friendly and was happy to make our acquaintance! :-) It was another picture taking adventure as our lens were constantly fogging up. Tek ah picture... wipe de lens... tek ah picture!! Sorry if your picture didn't make the cut... it was real pressure! It was a little after 1am when one of the first big artists appeared on stage. First up, was Kerwin Du Bois. "King Kong Crew, King Kong Crew... Everybody gone... Mad Mad!! When ah tell yuh wildness!! If you thought the crowd was already hyped off the DJs music, no words can describe the madness that Kerwin's performance created. People were jumping up from one end of the room to the next, getting on mad, mad, mad, madder dan dat!! Tunes like "Bubblenut " and "Madology" were so well received, that feters even commanded a return to the stage for one more piece of madness, and with a hyped crowd like that how could he resist. To keep the momentum going, and without further adieu... "Finally we reached, and iz Carnival time, when all de Trinis dem ready to wine, they come to play mas and dance in the fete, and on the road all of them soaking wet..." Performing for the very first time in Canada, Mr DJ was on stage and with ah big chune like dat, well you had to pull up that one up! At first, he kept the slow chip pace with his new chune "Dancing Padnah", before enticing the crowd with that serious chune... "Waistline Shots" (we will be getting the Carnival Time release soon). Talk about a prelude to Carnival 2k6! Well at this point, there was no turning back and the crowd was ready for more. And that meant it was time for the big ticket on the night, Lil' Rick aka Hypa Dawg! Is now de bacchanal really start! De man name is not Hypa Dawg for nuttin, bringing his classic chunes like "Mash up and Buy Back", along with 2005 hits like "Do Fa Do" and "Til Morning Come"... he had women of all shapes and sizes (you had to be there to know what we talkin' bout) finding their way to the stage, bringing all kind of "hard wine... rough wine." Big or small woman, Rick held it down like a true champion. Big up Lil' Rick making his long-awaited return to the T-Dot! If you don't have his lastest album "Spontaneous" yet, definitely add to your must buy list. During Lil' Rick's performance, he introduced brand new artist outta of the Monsta Piece crew, Miguel, who delivered a nice chune called "Come Close to Me." We understand that this chune did some damage this past Cropover festival in BIM. During all these performances, big time DJ Peter Coppin was commanding the one's and two's, and did a good job in hyping up the crowd. Of course, hats off to MarXman, Dr. Jay, Blackberry Soundcrew & Power Play that mash up de crowd all night with hot tunes ranging from back in the day to current. Dat sweet beat of the iron will make you jump up annnnnyytime, "Dead or Alive... still we comin." All in all, Soca or Die! Part 3 delivered what was promised. This installment had a stronger dash of Bajan pepper in the mix, but we guess when 3 of the 4 artists are Bajan, seeing so many Bajan flags waving high and low is expected!! ;-) But no matter which island was in majority, everyone on the inside shared a common passion... a love for Soca!! Music was nice, people was happy and drinks were flowin... and everyone was still celebrating the fact that Trinidad & Tobago going to Germany for World Cup 2006!!! Yeah Yeah!! We looking forward to Soca or Die Pt. 4, but next, we have to take ah lime with de big people and dem on Sunday November 27th at the "Big People Parang Show". See you there!! As Dr. Jay would say, "Jus Smile Nah!" Two
quick things before we go... Chooks ==================================== |
