be the one and only place to be on a Saturday night for DC Carnival. But
this year, Machel & Xtatik was carded to play at Crossroads on the
same night causing one set of confusion as to which fete to choose. Nice
enough, this didn't stop the massives from almost fully packing out the
DC Tunnel with a sea of all white. When we pulled up on the scene, there
was an air of uncertainty as to whether this fete was going to be a success.
When TJJ questioned some folks walking back to their cars, they said they
were leaving because it just wasn't what they expected. Now, we think
the location and layout of the venue had a lot to do with this... but,
TJJ knew there was a wicked lineup of Soca artists on the inside and wanted
to make sure we were on the scene to show love to the hard working promoters,
and of course, provide coverage for our fans. Once inside, we hit
the VIP lounge first and caught up with Chutney Soca Star, Hit Man,
for a one-on-one TJJ Interview to find out about Mr. Chankar's daughter
and the rum drinking situation! The interview got cut short because of
all the noise coming from the outside... Bunji and the Asylum Band
had hit main stage! Faye Ann Lyons, who was not carded to appear,
came on during Bunji's act and the crowd loved it as they waved their
flags high! What a great reaction to this wicked surprise! Break... Break
Away.... Start to jump! We've seen the Asylum Band perform several times
this year and as always, they put on a great show. Large up D'Fire Chief
and the Asylum family on the inside... less Gailann, who was scheduled
to perform in Toronto on the same night. Also on the scene
was Alison Hinds, the Bajan Soca Queen, who gave the DC Crowd a
taste of some good ole Bajan home-cooked Soca, singing her classics along
with her latest hit "Roll It".
The soca lovers also enjoyed a solid performance from Maximus the Gladiator.
Along with all his 2005 hit tunes, the crowd loved "Kick It Way",
which never fails to get a great reaction from the people. Up next...
Mr. "Soul on Fire"
KMC. This was TJJ's "First
Experience" seeing KMC perform since Trinidad Carnvial and
he didn't let us down. He gave a high-energy performance. And speaking
of high energy, Sherwayne Winchester alongside Candy and
the Traffik Band, really brought the energy to another level to
end the show on a positive note. De sound of the iron beating at the beginning
of Winchester's Road March hit "Dead or Alive", still
sends the crowd into a frenzy! And man, like Shurwayne went to rag waving
school... fuss he can wave dat rag fast! As far as performances
go, people definitely got their money's worth but what they got for free
was the extra heat at the DC Tunnel. The venue obviously has poor ventilation
or is in desperate need of a better air conditioning system. The size
of the venue was good for the crowd but the heat was too much for partygoers
to fete comfortably. Recommendation to the promoters for next year - find
a new venue! Another suggestion based on comments from the people - Destra
needed to be included in the lineup, that would have made the fete even
more of a success. Nevertheless, congrats to the promoters on a successful
event... successful, but HOT! We looking forward to cooling
down on Sunday... |
