Now this is no ordinary Sunday, this is THE party of all parties to kick off the Christmas season and we're sure you've guessed by now we talkin' bout de Big People Parang Show & Dance. Held at the distinguished Ellas Banquet Hall, everyone traded in their fete clothes to step out in their nice Sunday clothes. And when we say everyone, we talkin' bout parents, aunties, uncles, tanties... with the occasional 'youngins' in the mix. So it was a nice mix of people. Much to the delight of the crowd, doors were opened at 5:30pm. And proving that not all West Indian events are on "island time", Jai Ojah Maharaj (CHIN FM) announced the kick off just around the promised show time of 6:30pm with Sheldon Sookdeo playing a melodious arrangement on steel pan of both the Trinidad & Tobago and Canadian anthems. No sooner, guest were given a bonus performance by Billy D Kid who sang his brand new song "Sweat Rice" in addition to a remake of Penguin's classic "Soft Man"... well yes, the crowd was ready! It was at this point Moka, rated as Toronto's number one parang group, took to the stage and mash up de crowd with some of their festive tunes like "Zingay", "Mangoes" & "Mi Cafetal". We have to say, Moka did an excellent job of backing up all artists on the night as well. Now this show promised three big artists, so first up on the roster was Kenny J kicking off his performance with tunes like "Alexandra" and "De Paint Brush" the crowd, singing along was sure now ready to party. However, Kenny J's hit tunes "Addicted To Soca" and "Hush Yuh Mouth" truly demonstrated that de 'Big People' and dem was real enjoying de bacchanal lyrics. Without further adieu and all decked out in a full baby blue suit... we talkin' hat and shoes to match, like ah true sagga boy, Calypsonian Poser was up on stage. Apart from being delighted with his clothes, the crowd was equally excited when he began with one of his hot tunes "Sarano". Followed soon after with "Take A Drink", "Neighbour Neighbour" and "Country Christmas". But it was his big hit tune from 1979 "Ah Tell She" that had the crowd up on their feet and singing along with the legendary artist. Wow, if you see how the temperature rise in that banquet hall... heat fuh so! People were having ah real nice time and drinks were flowing very nicely!! There was a short pause to give parang revellers time to spruce up and of course sample some of Aunty Brenda, Aunty Cheryl & the rest of Dr. Jay's family delicious food. Trust us, there was plenty to go around... we talkin' Pastelle, Rice & Peas, Bake Chicken & Salad. So not only are you havin' ah good time, but yuh belly full too! Big shout outs to DJ Lenny who kept the crowd momentum going with sweet songs of soca and parang. Around 10:30pm, main headliner Scrunter took to the stage. By this time, there was not an inch of standing room left! People were up and dancing singing along to his tune "She want me to sing in she party". When ah tell yuh how great it is to see de 'Big People' and dem enjoy themselves. Scrunter put on a show like no other. Performing hit tunes from his past such as "Anita" & "Home Made Wine" to present hot tunes like "Bachelor" & "Trombone" there were just no words to describe the atmosphere inside Ellas Banquet Hall. Well maybe just 3 words... "Just smile nah!" And you know there is no Scrunter performance without the famous Parang tunes "Piece Ah Pork" & "Madame Jeffrey". Nuff said!! ;-) Well it was around 11:30pm when most 'Big People' decided to head home. After all, it was work early o'clock next day... at least for some of us!! Everyone left with nothing but smiles and humming sweet notes of Parang... so we got to say a BIG THANKS to Dr. Jay & friends for putting on this spectacular event and showing TJJ all the love!! Word has it that de 'Big People' already trying to by tickets for next year!! That's right, the date has already been set... November 26th 2006! No worries, Trini Jungle Juice will see you there! "Ahh want a piece
ah pork, ahhh want a piece ah pork for de Christmas"... Season Greetings
