CayMAS Carnival 2024: A Weekend of Vibrant Energy and Unforgettable Moments

What's up, Carnival lovers! It's your boy Dre aka The Carnival Ref, back with the lowdown on CayMAS Carnival 2024. From the moment I landed on the beautiful shores of Grand Cayman, you could feel the vibe building up to an epic celebration. The carnival spirit was alive and kicking!

 

We kicked off our CayMAS weekend at Sundown: The Exclusive Carnival Thursday Fete held at Pedro St. James Lawn, hosted by Jamaica Dancehall sensation Konshens. The party featured a performance by Bajan artist Father Phillis, who had everyone singing "Sweeeeettttt GIRLLL." Rain or no rain, the vibes were immaculate, setting the perfect tone for the weekend.

 

On Carnival Friday, Duck Work pool party returned for another year, bringing the heat with its non-stop soca beats. Later that night, the Cayman Islands hosted the very first Vibes With Voice concert at Seven Mile Public Beach. The lineup was stacked with live performances by the Bajan Soca sensation Rupee ("Tempted To Touch"), alongside Trinidad & Tobago's very own Kerwin Du Bois and Voice. Dispite Nailah Blackman not being able to make it, the show was electric, and the crowd couldn't get enough.

 

Saturday was all about the Parade of the Bands... and CayMAS 2024 brought the heat! The costumes were dazzling, with colors so vibrant they could rival a Caribbean sunset. The creativity and craftsmanship behind each piece were incredible. Mas bands really outdid themselves this year. Shoutout to all the masqueraders who brought their energy and spirit to the road – y'all made the parade unforgettable!

 

After the Adult Parade, we headed straight to the AfterMAS event on Saturday night which also hosted the Soca Monarch competition. Special congrats to your 2024 CayMAS Soca Monarch winner, Skorch Bun It, with his performance of "True Colours." Big up, Skorch Bun It! AfterMAS featured special DJ sets by the Soca Mashup King, DJ Kai, direct from Trinidad, as well as 2016 Red Bull Thre3Style World DJ Champion, DJ Puffy, from Barbados. There was a special performance by USVI Soca artiste Adam O to close out the show.

 

We closed out the weekend on Sunday with Swanky's Tied Up Boat Flex, which took us to Rum Point. The serene waters, the infectious soca rhythms, and the company of fellow carnival lovers made it an unforgettable experience.

 

In a nutshell, CayMAS Carnival 2024 was a perfect blend of culture, music, and bacchanal. The camaraderie, the laughter, the unforgettable moments – this carnival had it all. If you missed it, start planning for next year because CayMAS is a boutique carnival experience you don't want to sleep on.

J'Ouvert	There is no official CayMAS J'Ouvert. However, Mukky Jouvert fete offers an alternative on Sunday night/Monday morning kicking off at 12:01 AM. Also, if you like cruises, check out Jouvert on the Water on Carnival Thursday evening.
Must Do Event	On the Sunday, ALL roads/boats/jet skis lead to Rum Point / Starfish Point with deviations to Stingray City and Kaibo! Whether you jump on one of the big party boats to continue the weekend pump or choose a more intimate setting with friends on a private boat, it's the ultimate Cool Down party/lime and not to be missed.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Duration	The official calendar of events starts on the Wednesday and ends on the Monday. This is more than adequate time to enjoy both the events and the island. If you're pressed for time, then arrive on Friday and leave on Monday.
Parade Day / Road March	CayMAS Carnival Street Parade takes place on the Saturday and usually kicks off at 1pm heading up along West Bay Road and ends at Seven Mile Public Beach.
Currency	CI$1.00 = US$1.20 (as of July 2022). The Cayman Islands Dollar (currency code KYD) is the currency of the Cayman Islands. It is abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively CI$
Temperature	Tropical. Hot, Humid, temperate interior. Georgetown has warm temperatures year round ranging between 28°C (82°F) and 32°C (89°F).
TJJ Recommended Hotel	There's no shortage of hotels, villas and guest houses in Grand Cayman. Tried and tested, #1 for me is Palm Heights (Beach Suites) - Cayman Islands' first all suite boutique hotel. In 2023, I had an enjoyable stay at Grand Cayman Marriott Resort. Definitely add the Breakfast Included option when booking. Their buffet option and regular menu is winning!
Best places to stay	Ideally you should stay on the west side of the island along the award-winning Seven Mile Beach stretch, striking distance from all of the carnival action.
Communication / Mobile Providers	There's Digicel and Flow.
Transportation	Grab a rental at the airport. Nothing fancy, just something to get you from A to B. If possible, avoid a left-hand side drive vehicle. Driving a left-hand drive vehicle on the left-hand side of the road can get confusing, especially when driving back and forth between the Caribbean and the US. Taxis are also readily available from all Cayman Islands resorts.
Flights	Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands is your destination. Owen Roberts International Airport is the main international airport for the Cayman Islands as well as the main base for Cayman Airways.
FOOD AND DRINKS
Cost of a 2 Piece Combo	$6.95 CI / $8.35 USD. Using our KFC global standard, a (Meal Deal) 2 Pc. Chicken Combo, which includes individual side (Fries) & medium drink, cost $5.99 in the US.
Local Food	Coconut shrimp, conch, fish fry and Turtle Stew. Singh's Roti Shop will provide you will all the curry & stew you can eat! Roti or local Caribbean food, you can't go wrong. Grape Tree Café is your best bet for delicious fried fish in Bodden Town, a small village on the southern end of Grand Cayman.
Local Drinks	Caybrew, 345 Lager, White Tip Lager and Blended Cocktails.
Late Night Eats	Al La Kebab and Burger Shack, both located in Marquee Plaza, have saved many of lives.

Alcohol purchase	There are many liquor stores on-island, but Jacques Scott Wines & Spirits has everything you need.

Advice to Cayman Carnival Virgins:-

1. In between all of the festivities, be sure to take full advantage of one of the world’s best beaches - Seven Mile Beach. Its gorgeous clear waters and coral sands still lure visitors from around the world.
2. Try the Turtle Stew.
3. Play Mas. Watching from the side lines will never compare to the first hand experience.
4. Don't leave after the Street Parade. Stingray City and Rum Point boat party/lime on Sunday is a MUST do.
