Time to Spice Up Our Summer!

After 26 hours stranded in Piarco airport due to the LIAT strike, I landed on the wonderful Spice Island, being welcomed by rum punch and an empty airport. Swiftly moved through customs, and rapidly through baggage claim, especially since I was missing luggage, but no worries, I was just happy to be home. I was finally released outdoors, ready to begin an adventure that would be the highlight of my summer ... Spicemas 2K11!

I linked with TallGlassAhJuice, welcomed him to the team, and we got down to business! We were off to a small lime for the night, and mapped out all of the spots we'll be hitting for the entire Carnival season. It seemed like a lot of work before Chooks and Frenchie touched down in the land, but we held it down in Greenz.

First stop, a lil warm up session at Bananas for Cooler Fete. Grenada is the home of the world famous, St. George's University, and the SGU crowd definitely knows how to get down. Their favorite spot is definitely Club Bananas, no matter what night it is. A nice flair of diversity, we love it!

A few Queenly duties followed the Cooler Fete, but then it was time to switch gears for one of the most exhilarating experiences of the Carnival, as fans from all over and the entire island came to the National Stadium for Pree Day. We say Tallpree, Machel Montano and the HD Family, t'was a can't miss for thousands Jab Jab, Foreigner and Local, Reptiles, Vagrants, Artist and Gettonaz!

We took a breather in between, after our late nights and late mornings, with a little beach action. Sweet blue crystal clear waters in the blazing hot sun ... daily trips to Grand Anse beach did the trick. We linked with the cool kids in town at Umbrellas, right down Grand Anse Beach, quite a few times, to indulge the delicious menu. Before we knew it, night fell again, and it was back to "business".

This had to be not only THE BEST Spicemas ever, but the best summer vacation. De Permit Fete has been the fete I've been hitting year after year, since my teenage days and continues to outdo itself. After leaving Permit in the wee hours of the morning, its a quick nap, hold a fresh and off to the Carenage for Summercrew's Bikini Cruise. Daddy Juice and Frenchie met us at the Carenage, fresh off the plane, running on no sleep, straight from BIM (see Crop Over 2011 Coverage) ... how they manage to get out of Barbados with all the Liat strike drama beats me! But they made it so this year, team TJJ covering both The Party Boat and The VIP Boat ... braaaapppps!! After hours at sea (in boat ride heaven) it was pretty much straight to the country for White in the Moonlight featuring Kes the Band, the last fete before all the action on d road.

Cocoa Juice Spicemas Do's and Don't -

  • DO - Wear sunblock at all times because you will get burnt and crispy ... like us.
  • DON'T - Speak to local vendors with a super yankee voice, they will jack up the price. DUH!
  • DO - Visit the country side on down time. There's more scenic views and beautiful beaches beyond town.
  • DON'T - Wine on a random jab jab. He might be a vagrant or be out of the pink house for the day.
  • DO - Get a day pass and visit different hotels along the Grand Anse Beach for the day. Spice Island Resort (TJJ's #1 recommendation), Coyaba and Grand Beach are highly recommended.
  • DO - Play Mas with Summercrew! They are the swankiest ... Medical Students Gone Wild!
  • DON'T - Be scared to explore. Grenada is one of the safest islands in the region, its easy to get around and most people are quite helpful.
  • DO - Indulge in food. A frequent food coma were the highlights of the trip. Whether its Umbrellas, Port Louie Marina, Aquarium or Le Phare Bleu. Eat. Its a euphoric experience.

The Carnival was sooooo sweet that we didn't want to leave ... and we weren't the only ones. Trini's deejay TITAN VCD, artistes Benjai & Iwer, the Synergy TV and 91.9 FM TriniBashment crews and our very own, Chooks (The Carnival Ref) and Frenchie also sulked on their way off the island, but we'll all be back very soon. Guaranteed.
