OVER 2011 COVERAGE
The Ting Cyaan Be Over Barbados Crop Over, dubbed "The Sweetest Summer Festival", proved to be be nothing less. In fact, this might have actually been one of, if not the biggest Crop Over season hands down. Visitor arrivals for the season and stay on visitors post-Kadooment for the RIHANNA LOUD CONCERT were record breaking. From the time we touched down in Bim on the Carnival Wednesday it was pure pace right up til Kadooment Day... talk bout fetes taking place! You can always count on our TJJ Party Guru's to score each event to determine who claimed the #1 spot (see TJJ Guru Report Card for Crop Over 2011 below), and of course, we must give you the blow by blow of how things unfolded. While Wednesday (HARBOUR LIGHTS, WADADAH) and Thursday (GLOW BARBADOS and FRAZZLED) gave you the regular party offerings, when Friday rolled around, one would swear it's Carnival Friday in Trinidad. Fuss it's fete after fete after fete! Let's count... 1) Roast
Cruise And these are just the fetes that TJJ knew about and were planning to attend ... key word, planning. 4 out of 8 isn't too bad right? We going for the full hundred in 2012! With FOREDAY MORNING (J'ouvert) becoming quite popular (most certainly on everyone's Top 3 Crop Over things to do), it's making the transition gaps (some call it sleep) between the Friday night fetes and Saturday morning breakfast parties very tight - it's truly no rest for the wicked! For 2011, we enjoyed our jump with both Island Fusion and Collision Foreday bands down (well up) Spring Garden. Unfortunately we haven't seen Wadadah Morning Brek Out since 2009 (view coverage) simply because we're just too exhausted from the Friday action. On Carnival Saturday, BLISS 'SUMMER EDITION' is still the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of parties. So be sure to get your 'golden ticket' early o'clock or face the scapler music. Esquire Entertainment, we love how you guys don't repeat venues, yet keep on finding the best spots to entertain your crowd. Now Barbados is the land of cruises. It would be a crime to not do at least one cruise for Crop Over! Although the infamous BOOZE CRUISE controls the shores of Barbados having the two largest vessels (MV Harbour Master and Jolly Rogers) on the Carnival Sunday, LIMERZ CRUISE has now grown to five catamarans, yet still maintaining their intimate vibe. SCORCH CRUISE, in it's 2nd year, continues to get rave reviews (especially from the Bajan's who love off the Trini party vibes) on the Saturday. But the cruise that took the cake, with all the cherries on top, for 2011 was ROAST CRUISE! Long story short... TJJ will not be missing this one in the future. And when one thought all cruises were said and done, in comes our friend AJ (former "106 & Park" host and "Extra" correspondent) with his COOL DOWN CRUISE on the Tuesday following Kadooment. Two words ... "Invitation ONLY". RED HOT COHOBBLOPOT welcomed back 'The Return' of Machel Montano and the HD Family. And besides all the talk in the newspapers, on the airwaves and not forgetting Facebook about what the reaction to soca's biggest star returning to headline Crop Over's biggest event was going to be (and the contention over Machel's image being used to promote the Crop Over Festival), Kensington Oval was on fire! The climax (or maybe not - read on)... KADOOMENT DAY! Besides masqueraders being in their glee when it started to rain, there's something else that can trump this Euphoria.... A TWO DAY JUMP! If St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Grenada all have 2-day parades... Barbados, you have no excuse... NONE! Six hours racing down the narrow roads to get to Spring Garden (where most bands disseminate) isn't cutting it. A 2-day jump will not only give mas revellers more satisfaction, but will also grow the Crop Over festival period. This year, the Sweetest Summer Festival didn't end after Kadooment Day, as Barbados very own Ri Ri put on a full-length concert of her current "Loud" tour at Kensington Oval on the Friday (5th August) - perhaps the real climax for this year's Grand Kadooment! And yes, Trini Jungle Juice did lime around in Bim to soak it all in. And after the show is the ... AFTER PARTY at the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre (thanks Sacha). So let's re-cap on some of our favourite 2011 Crop Over moments:-
