Soca lovers ah say ... come to meh!
Come to meh!

And come they did. To Berlin. For carnival again!

From London (and we mean LOADS from London), Paris, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Austria, Russia, Belgium, various parts of Germany, New York and even small lil' Luxembourg, the soca lovers of Europe came in droves. Groups planned packages that included a party bus ride, hotel accommodation, fete packages and crew branded clothing to represent at this year's Karneval de Kulturen. Add to the mix the HOT weekend weather forecast, from the get go the air was abuzz for the weekend's activities.

While there was a Welcome Lime on the Thursday night that TJJ heard was well attended by the London crew, for most folks the carnival weekend started at Soca on the Beach on Friday afternoon at Badeschiff Arena. With a bigger crowd than last year, DJs D-One (Holland), Tate (UK) and Dr. Jay (Toronto) had nuff vibes to work with, including a rolly polly dance off. If you weren't there - don't ask. While some folks stayed on for the Soca on the Beach After Party, the Team TJJ - Daddy Juice, Juicy Juice and myself - opted for the Friday night Soca Twins Carnival Jump Up featuring Swappi in a 4D, who entertained the crowd with popular soca chunes of the last few years along with his own hits. It was a good first day!

Carnival Fever Entertainment Soca Family BBQ Lime on Saturday afternoon was a completely different affair from last year! Good weather and a crew ready to vibes up the place can make all the difference. If you only say DSL, Roopie will whistle!! smile Oh and the food was good too. This event ends at a decent hour so folks can go change up for the main event at night, if you were able to score a ticket that is. Yea the dance was SOLD OUT!

Carnival Glow this year featured Machel Montano and trusty DJ Stephen on the 1s and 2s. Giving them pace Machel delivered his typical vibesy set. We understand Germans love live musicians though and there were some that would have loved to see the whole HD band live. Luckily for them Rotterdam Carnival on July 19th will indeed feature the whole HD family at the parade after party. Be there or be ... not there? As with a real Trini fete, this one didn't end until the sun came up which means there was just enough time for a nap and time to get on the road for the parade.

This year there were two "Trini" sections in the parade - Carnival Explosion and Carnival Fever. After a superb "Superblue" theme last year (see Berlin Carnival 2013), Carnival Explosion opted to feature a Trini delight - Snow Cones. With four flavors (sections) folks were treated to some sour lemon, wild berry, juicy orange and green apple complete with snow cone vendor and truck. The level of detail that went into the truck was absolutely fantastic. You could have sworn was the band leaders were Trini instead of Germans. Again Carnival Explosion had security for their group which makes a huge difference to their masqueraders' enjoyment on the day. DJs D-One, Walshy Fire (Major Lazer/Black Chiney), Markee (UK), Barney Millah (Germany) and the beloved German Soca Twins provided the vibes for the day.

Carnival Fever, as usual, had the last truck of the parade and with Machel, DJ Stephen, DJ Tate, Dr. Jay, Martin Jay and Fever's DJ Hendrik on board to hype up both the costumed and T-shirted revellers aplenty there was no stopping this party. Even Moms (DJ Stephen's mom) was enjoying the lime. And just like Trinidad, anytime there is rum you need to have roti! So off to Merle's Roti and Rum (http://trinidad-cuisine.de/) we trekked again only to experience Merle's generous hospitality. This year we were on time though and were able to taste not only the roti but some German doubles (yum yum - see pic) and a lil' dance... *hand over my face*

Again, I can't say enough just how similar the German partying is to us in Trini. There were no less than 3 las lap fetes this year Twice as Nice featuring Erphaan Alves , Caribbean Invasion featuring Assassin and Astra Carnival featuring Walshy Fire and Jillionaire ... and we actually made to the latter. Yes, all of us! And with the after party food hitting the spot, we were back in yet another Mercedes (taxi) back to hotel.

We understand though that Copenhagen has their Carnival same weekend as Berlin's.... and where there is a carnival... like Rupee says "I will be there!" 2015....

We Love Carnival ... We Know Carnival ... WE ARE CARNIVAL!
