DJs PROFILES ALEX JORDAN Alex Jordan is 1Xtra BBC's first lady of Soca Music - literally! The UK station has never had a lady at the helm before, and Alex could not be more ready for the challenge. Barbados born Alex was a child model as well as being a keen athlete before music became her focus. As a junior she represented Barbados as a swimmer and golfer, and also did ballet, jazz and tap dancing for 10 years. As a teenage dancer Alex discovered the performance bug and has not looked back since. At 16 she won a prestigious Prince of Wales scholarship to a United World College to study the International Baccalaureate. She went on to receive an honours degree from McGill University in Montreal in Third World Politics and Modern Languages but returned to Barbados to front a drive time radio show on 104.1 Yess FM and play squash for the Barbados Ladies Team. Alex became the poster girl for Barbados Crop Over Festival, the voice of Banks Beer and worked successfully as a broadcaster while working for a period at a UN office. She continued to make a name for herself as the face of the Plantation Tropical Spectacular, a live show that led Maxi Priest to ask Alex to tour with him. Instead Alex embarked no a US tour with a Caribbean Rock Band, across 15 cities and 3 states as the tour presenter. Since coming to the UK Alex has been working in A&R for Polydor Records. She has worked as a Presenter friend on BBC Live's Late Night Curry, moonlighted for Synergy TV and presented Polydor's artistes at EMAP, MTV, and Channel 4. Alex now has her own Soca show on 1Xtra BBC and presents the International Sounds of Soca every Sunday 2-4am UK time. She has been a Soca music fan since birth and is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring it to the UK on the International Sounds Of Soca - the only national Soca Show in the UK. Her voice is being used to front both radio and TV commercials and she continues to present one off musical nights like Sonic Quality, to support up and coming unsigned artists of all genres.
